Dolbok, the first birthday suit, is a formal suit a person puts on for the first time after birth. It not only a symbolizes of Korean customs or traditions, but also represents transmitted ideas, values and lifestyles of Koreans. In this nation where strong preferences for son prevailed, dolbok for boy was specially important. But there were few studies discussing a suit worn by the baby in his or her first birthday, that is, dolbok as an independent theme, especially the suit for boys. Thus the purpose of this study is to classify and analyze characteristics of dolbok for boys, especially in terms of wearing styles, colors and pattern by reviewing related literature and pictures of the past. Results of the study can be described as follows. 1. Dol is the date of a year after birth. It is sometimes called Chodoil(,初度日), Suil, Junyeon(周年) or Su. Dolbok means a special suit that is worn by a child in his or her first birthday. 2. The history of party for first birth anniversary is unclear, but seems so long. Some true records of the Chosun Dynasty show that parties were held to celebrate the first birthday of the royal prince, suggesting that events in memory of dol should begin in earnest by the court of Chosun. 3. Styles of weaing Dolbok are classfied into trousers and jeogori, baeja, magoja, durumagi, jeonbok, sagyusam and yongpo styles in accordance with what kind of clothes was finally worn. Jeogori style refers to wearing only trousers and jeogori both of which are most basic to dolbok for boys and Baeja style, wearing baeja above the combination of trousers and jeogori. Magoja style means wearing magoja above baeja or jokki that was worn above the foresaid combination. Durumagi style refers to wearing durumagi above baeja or magoja for jokki. Jeonbok style means wearing jeonbok above durumagi and sagyusam style, sagyusam above durumagi or a suit of durumagi and jeonbok. Finally, yongpo style indicates wearing yongpo above sagyusam. 4. Accessories of dolbok for boys included dolddi, dol jumeoni, gulre, bokgeon, hogeon and tarae baeseon. Dolddi was a waist band worn by the baby in his or her first birthday. It had indigo blue symbols of youth and longevity embroidered on its red color bottom. Dolddi was sometimes combined with a small pouch that contained various kinds of grains, wishing food richness throughout life. Gulre was a hat for children of upper-class family for both representation of wealth and protection against the cold. It was worn by both male and female babies before their first birthdays. As a substitute for crown, bokgeon or hogeon was worn at the date of first birth anniversary or festive day. Gilded with a pattern wishing the baby’s health, longevity or wealth, bokgeon or hogeon was worn together with durumagi, jeonbok or sagyusam. Tarae beoseon was childlen's socks worn at the day of first birth anniversary. Two decorative saddle stitches were put in the ankle of the socks. On the width of the socks the patterns of a Bulrocho(herb for eternal youth) and flowers were embroidered. 5. Dolbok of trousers and jeogori, baeja or magoja style simply consisted of 2 to 4 units of clothes. It was usually worn by ordinary people, and strongly imaged as common. Dolbok of durumagi or jeonbok style was a combination of 5 to 6 units of clothes and mainly worn by noble and royal families. It was remarkably formal, but quite brilliant. The suit for first birth anniversary which was sagyusam or yongpo was made in accordance with court rules and used by the royal family, It consisted of 7 to 8 units of clothes. Dolbok of sagyusam or yongpo style used invariable, simple patterns and colors, but had strong images of courtesy and dignity . 6. Regarding accessories of dolbok, the long-hanged goreum was a symbol of parental wishes for the baby’s health and longevity and dolddi was joined by dol jumeoni symbolizing the wealth and prosperity of the baby. In addition, hogeon was a hat whose shape was the head of tiger symbolizing wishes for bravery and health and tarae beoseon was childlen's socks that had seams, symbolizing prosperity, on the fore edge. Seon for sagyusam was used as a symbol of preventing diseases or evil spirits to protect the health of the baby. 7. Regarding relations among ojeongsaek(five-primary colors ; 五正色), gansaek(secondary colors ; 間色) and japsaek(colors other than five-primary and secondary ones ; 雜色), the first colors were used more than the other twos. Out of five-primnary colors, blue was most in proportion, followed by red and yellow in order. Mostly found in ojeongsaek, gansaek and japsaek were blue and its similiar color like green. This is because blue color symbolizes good fortune, especially in relation to boy. Red and pink, or feminine colors were also often used because when used together, blue and red could symbolize exorcism best.. 8. Relations between dolbok and saekdong were analyzed to find that saekdong magoja and saekdong durumagi, ojeongsaek(five-primary colors) were used even more than gansaek(secondary colors) and that male colors were used much more than female ones in accordance with the theory of Yin-Yang thought and the Five Activities. It was also found that male colors were used for the sleeves of saekdong magoja and saekdong durumagi even more than female ones. 9. Among ways of patterning dolbok for boys, fabric patterning was mostly used, followed by gilding and embroidering in order. Types of patterns applied to the suit for the boy’s first birth anniversary were mostly occupied by flower patterns, followed by design symbolizing good fortune and then character pattern symbolizing the same. Relations between ways of patterning and pattern types were investigated to find that in most cases, fabric patterning was used to create flower patterns, gilding, character patterns symbolizing good fortune and embroidering, flower patterns.
