The purpose of this study is to investigate general characteristics of PM10 and heavy metals in the air, and compare and assess them during the yellow-sand period and non yellow-sand period, in order to provide basic data of air quality management on the phenomenon of the yellow-sand in Daegu area. The data used in this study is the concentration data of PM10 and heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Fe and Ni) from air pollution monitoring network data in Daegu area, and monthly environmental reports issued by the Ministry of Environment. The annual mean concentration of PM10 measured by 6 stations of air pollution monitoring network in Daegu area is 64㎍/㎥ which satisfies the environmental air quality standard(70㎍/㎥). The difference of the PM10 concentration by region is shown with Suchang-dong(commercial area) as the highest, followed by Daemyung-dong(residential area), Bokhyeon-dong(residential area), Nowon-dong(industrial area), Ihyeon-dong (industrial area), and Manchon-dong(residential area) as the lowest. The scope of the change is the smallest in Manchon-dong. Due to the yellow-sand The mean concentration of heavy metals in Daegu area(Ihyeon-dong, Suchang-dong and Daemyung-dong) during the research period is shown in the following order: Fe > Cu > Pb > Mn > Ni > Cr > Cd. In Suchang-dong, Pb which is considered highly dependent on the traffic volume is shown higher than that of other areas. Regarding the concentration of heavy metals measured on the day of yellow-sand, Fe and Mn are shown more than three times higher than the annual mean concentration value.phenomenon in spring, a monthly mean concentration of PM10 in spring increases by 18% compared with that in winter, and by 58.6% compared with that in summer which is a non-yellow sand period. The daily mean concentration of the day yellow-sand appeared increases by 106% compared with the annual mean concentration. In terms of regions, the increase is shown as follows: Suchang-dong with 82%, Ihyeon-dong, 131%, Daemyung-dong, 98%, Nowon-dong, 126%, Bokhyeon-dong, 100%, and Manchon-dong, 109%.
