The polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is one of the most attractive energy conversion devices. It is regarded as a power source for stationary and mobile applications. Thanks to their high power density performance at low temperature (70~90°C), PEMFCs are very promising as energy source for electric vehicles. Nevertheless, the cost of a PEMFC stack is still prohibitive for mass production and the introduction of low cost materials and/or process is necessary. Moreover, industrial production needs a further quality control to guarantee that every PEMFC stack will have well-defined performance. One of the main objective of the present study is to demonstrate the feasibility of fuel cell power source such as current density, potential etc. for electric units. In this paper, therefore, a simple single-phase two-dimensional steady-state model of a PEM fuel cell is presented. The equation of the system model is formulated by using the finite element method and the boundary condition is set up for the proposed model. This model used current balances, mass balances and momentum balances to simulate the PEM fuel cell behavior for the satisfactory results. To compare with the simulation, 5cm² unit cell and 200cm² stack with the serpentine channel is developed. This work is also included unit cell and 300W stack experiment to evaluate the accuracy of the fuel cell simulation. From the simulation results, optimal variables is applied into the experiment condition for obtaining better current density vs. potential performance. At first, the simulation for unit cell is implemented under the ambient STP condition and the dependent variable change such as flow rate, pressure and temperature. As a result of the simulation, it is found that the variation of the flow rate does not influence the cell performance and the increasing pressure of the fuel such as hydrogen and oxygen enhanced the cell performance as the pressure augmented. But the increment in pressure and temperature infinitely did not increase the cell performance. And second, after finding the optimal thickness of the active layer, it is found that the active layer of 80μm is more useful for the optimal operation and the active layer thickness around from 80μm to 100μm worked best. 200cm² stack analysis shows that the performance is increased when oxygen is supplied into cathode. At this point, it is estimated that power is maximized around 32W in 80A. As results, this paper includes obtaining the optimal variable to enhance the performance of the PEM fuel cell.
