This dissertation aims to give a semantic analysis of English aspect, namely, progressive and perfect in the framework of situation semantics (Barwise & Perry 1983). Their syntactic and semantic representations are based on the co-description approach in which Lexical Functional Grammar plays part of syntax and Situation Semantic, part of semantics. The syntactic and semantic expressions of co-description approach are represemted in terms of feature structure which is characteristic of partial function and the operation of unfication. The traditional analyses of aspect are introduced to show the general properties of English aspect. The formal semantic approaches to aspect which is characteristic of a uniform treatement of aspect are presented and criticized. In perfect they are Reinbach's theory (Reinbach 1947), Montague's theory (Montague 1974a) 'extended now' theory (McCoard 1978, Dowty 1979, 1982, Richards 1982, Heny 1982, Cochrane 1978), closed interval approach (Bennett 1981), and Woisetchlaeger's theory (Woisetchlaeger 1976). In the case of Rinbach's theory he posited the reference time in temporal framework to distinguish the simple past sentence from the present perfect sentence. The problem in his theory is that he does not formulate the truth conditions for the perfect sentence, which cause a problem to us in distinguishing the meaning of the perfect sentence from that of its counterpart simple sentence truth-conditionally. Montague's theory fails in distinguishing the meaning of the present perfect sentence from that of the simple past sentence by treating the present perfect sentence exactly like a simple past sentence. Futhermore he does not take into consideration the interval property of event, which makes his anlysis of the present perfect problematic. The 'extended now' theory suggests that the present perfect expresses a past event within a time span that is continuous with the present. By intalling a time frame which is related with the present time. It tries to express the temporal relevancy of the described event to the present time, thus to distinguish the meaning of the present perfect sentence from the simple past sentence. But the problem of this theory is that installing a large temporal framework which includes the time of described event does not gurantee that the result of described event persists through the present situaton. The closed interval approach to perfect tries to express the performance of perfect sentences, that is, the perfect aspect indicates the completion of act. This theory does not say anything of how the event expressed in present perfect is temporally and in terms of the result of the event, related to the uttreance situation, which the interval semanticists are deeply concerned with. Woisetchlaeger tries to express how the described event is related with the current situation in terms of 'status quo'. He installs an unspecific proposition which is to be filled by some pragmatic principles. But his formuala of perfect not say anything of conversational principles which gurantee the concept of staus quo except positiong two propositions in sequence. In situation semantic approach the perfectness of the perfect sentence comes from the structural constraint that two situations are included in a larger situation of the perfect sentence. The described event precedes the discourse situation in a larger situation. The relevancy of the described situation to the current situation is due to the fact that they are adjacent to each other. This comes from the partiality of situation. In progressives three types of the previous foraml approaches are introduced and criticized to investigate what problems there are in their approaches. The actual time line approach which tries to deal with the progressives in terms of temporal properties of actual time fails in explaining the so-called 'imperfective paradox' which says that the progressive sentences of achievement or accomplishment does not entail their counterpart simple sentence. In the progressive sentences of creation verb phrases it does not say how the object denoted by noun phrase does not exist. The modal approach which makes use of the possible worlds in explaining the modal properties of progressive sentences overcomes the problems which cause a trouble to the former approaches in dealing with the 'imperfective paradox', but the fact that it does not take into the consideration the contextual information which is contradictory to the embedded proposition of the progressive sentence, allows the progressive sentence to be always false, contrary to our intuition that it is not the case. Parson's theory(Parson 1989) demonstrates the semantic similarity stative sentences and the progressive sentences. Futhermore it can avoid the 'imperfective paradox' by introducing the logical constant 'Hold' in his logical form. Its problem is that in the progressive sentences of creation verb, there should exist an object denoted by a noun phrase which is to exist only when the event is completed. Saurer(1984) intorduces the branch future model into Higginbothom's logical form(Higginbothom 1983) in which event is a primitive entity which acts like a variable of ordinary first-order logic. His theory overcomes the 'imperfective paradox' by using the concept of possible history which acts like an inertia world of Dowty's modal approach. In addition he introduces the function which take into account the information which is related to the actual part of the possible history, to avoid the contradictoriness which occurs when some event which is incompatible to the natural course of event exists in the actual part of the possible history. In situation semantic approach the meaning of the progressive sentence is expressed by the structural constraint which constraints the relation of two situations. This characteristic of situation semantics comes from the partiality of situation. The fact that progressive sentences of accomplishment and achievement don't entail their counterpart simple sentences relys on the properties of structural constraint itself the violation of which depends on the type of constraint. The problem which occurs in possible world approach when the event which is incompatible with the natural course of event exists in actual situation can be overcomed by the partiality of situation.
