The rapidly increasing number of runaway youths is at a very high risk of danger. This is not caused by running away itself, but is because of their exposure to various delinquent and criminal environments. That is, since running away isolates them from secure social support, it hinders the wholesome development of youths. This leads them to act as catalysts, generating threats to all including individuals, families, schools and society by causing problems such as violence, theft, drug addiction, prostitution and underage pregnancy. Therefore, in-depth research in various areas is required. This study has been conducted to find the meaning and the essence of experience such as running away from home by intensively understanding a variety of psychological experiences of runaway youths residing in shelter. This study would provide the stability to those who are in danger of running away from home in physical, psychological, and social views by reflecting on life or consciousness of runaway youths. And, it would give parents whose children are in danger of running away useful advice at a juvenile guidance clinic as a basic counseling material. This study is conducted to understand the meaning of runaway through lived experience by applying methodology of hermeneutic phenomenological approach of Max van Manen: turning to phenomenon of interest, inquiring and investigating experience as it was lived rather than as conceptualized, reflecting and analyzing essential themes which characterize phenomenon and describing phenomenon through art of writing and rewriting. Participants of this research have experienced the runaway more than once and they led a vagrant life at least a month or so after leaving home. A total of sixteen teenagers between thirteen and eighteen years old who are residing at shelters participated in this study. Data on statement of direct and actual experience through a depth interview during the period between April and October in 2005 were collected from them. Their drawings and writings were gathered as well. Beside, a variety of art works such as literary works or pictures, lyrics, films, plays, advertisements related to runaway youths were collected as material for reference when analyzing the data. With the results of analysis on the participants' statements at the reflection of hermeneutic phenomenology, several main subjects were appeared: <I am unattended into a home environment such as ‘an empty house' as well as a prison without bars>, <My stifling school life which only measured by school grades>, <Anxiety toward future experienced after realizing the impulse to runaway>, <I am gradually into an environment liable to committing a crime in which a ‘trap' of crime hangs over it>, <A distorted self-portrait caused by a cold reception from society and by being socially branded as a loser>, <Taking psychological stabilization from shelter and a glimmering light of hope>, <Recognition of the downfalls of shelter>, <Another runaway compulsion caused by temptations from outside the shelter>. As a result of analyzing data collected, the main subject of youth's runaway goes as follows. <I am unattended into a home environment such as ‘an empty house' as well as a prison without bars> - A cold and dark empty house without family who understand and take care of me - I am an subject of satisfying resentment for my parents who are second-class citizens. - An impulse to escape from a prison that restrain me and tie me up <My stifling school life which only measured by school grades> - My meaningless and boring school life in which I only experience failures - I am an ‘outsider' who are not getting along well not belonging to my peer group. - Absence of ‘significant other' whom I can consult with about troubles without reserve - An impulse of runaway raises quickly by establishing his age group or his crowd under the similar circumstances <Anxiety toward future experienced after realizing the impulse to runaway> - A sense of being free and easy for escape from restrictions of home and school - Curiosity and vague expectancy toward the unexpectable outside world - Anxiety about the uncertain future followed by a sense of freedom - Hesitation about whether to go back home or not in fear of being scolded by parents once again <I am gradually into an environment liable to committing a crime in which a ‘trap' of crime hangs over it> - To survive from the outside world I become to try distorted strategy for existence. - An indescribable pleasure by doing committing a crime as well as misconducting myself and a feeling of satisfaction of ‘revenge myself' - I found that I could not extricate myself from the ‘trap' of crime that slowly tighten me up <A distorted self-portrait caused by a cold reception from society and by being socially branded as a loser> - My miserable situation without any toehold such as ‘an isolated island' - Regret for thoughtless behavior of leaving home - Resentment and hatred against family who left me - A stony stare; ‘Once a problem child, always a problem child’ <Taking psychological stabilization from shelter and a glimmering light of hope> - Relief to take a rest and rely on at the end of wandering from place to place for a long time - Yearning toward family and a regrettable feeling which rise slightly in heart - Germinant will of rebirth to make a fresh start in life <Recognition of the downfalls of shelter> - Extremely regular life with a number of restrictions in Shelter derives me bored and lethargic - Dissatisfaction with being impossible of realization caused by poor facilities and conditions - A sense of uneasiness from a limit of provisional life in Shelter - Small or large conflicts arising during group life with peers <Another runaway compulsion caused by temptations from outside the shelter> - Friends outside shelters incite runaway from shelters. - Deviation psychology re-emerges due to conflicts from group life. Running away causes distinct psychological experiences and is explained in the following paragraphs. First, the runaway experience of youths is physical and psychological cutoff; runaways intentionally cut all relations with their family and friends. Youths want to cut their relationships with family members psychologically as well as physically by no longer sharing physical spaces with them. But this results in intentional or unintentional separation from schools and they become isolated from the safeguard consisting of teachers and peers. In the course of interviews, they described the act of just not going back home as staying out without notice. They describe leaving their own families, and in turn getting discarded by families physically and mentally as a running away. Therefore, more active therapeutic intervention, such as mentoring programs, must be completed before putting them back in their houses or implementing disciplinary punishment from school in order to recover psychological relationships with their families and re-establish the social support system of communities and schools for them. Second, as soon as youths, they have to provide their own clothing, food and accommodation. This is very tough but imperative. Youths impulsively escape conflicts and suppressions from schools and homes, but the outside would is not the fairy tale they expected. To live in a cold and cruel society, most youths engage in delinquency and crimes like theft or prostitution. They feel great anxiety for their immediate future and experience fatigue in life though everyday tension. Third, the lives of runaway youths are like those floating seeds that can't root anywhere. Youths, psychologically wandering due to the instability and uncertainty of their current situation, impulsively escape from reality with vague and unrealistic expectations for the unknown world. At first, abuse and stress from family members drive them out of their homes, but as their running away becomes repeated and chronic, a sense of instability, uncertainty and unrealistic expectations for the unknown continue to incite the impulse. Some decide to go to shelters and try to rehabilitate. However, when they face new problems arising from temporary stays in shelters and can not decline the temptation from outside the shelters, they start wandering again and show deviation that can lead to crimes. Warm care, adequate facilities and various educational programs should be provided in shelters for runaway youths to stop wandering and gain psychological independence. These factors contribute to the psychological research of youths as follows. First, given the fact that the homes and schools which are responsible for personal safety and development for youths provide the initial point of their cutting social connections, it can be asserted that psychological counselling programs and in-depth research regarding relationships with family members and peers are required. This research can be served as not only basic material applied to the development of individual or group counselling programs for youths in danger of running away, their peers and parents, but also as background information for policy makers and teachers who guide and educate youths onsite. Second, as known in the interviews, shelters do not help reduce the chronic facing youths or their various needs because they provide only temporary protection. In turn, it leads to another attempt to run away. Short-term protection of shelters can solve the problem of exposure to dangers but cannot provide basic solutions for habitual runaways. This implies that shelters should provide runaway youths with opportunities to discover their ego and express their positive needs as well as improve their environments. This research can be used as a reference for flexible operations and the development of sound programs in teenager shelters. Third, this research collected autobiographical statements of runaway youths through a qualitative research method of in-depth counselling focusing on quality aspects of life experiences rather than quantitative measures of life. That is, youths were encouraged to state significant incidents related to runaway or talk about important people in their lives. It gave them chances to look back at the past and self-reflect. This qualitative approach to life experience enabled them to resolve unresolved problems deep inside their minds and re-interpret the incidents to provide the opportunity for discovery of their ego and development. Finally, a few limitations on this research and suggestions for future studies may be described as follows: First, building trust between researchers and research participants must precede affluent and honest statements of life experience. Without this, it may be difficult to hear honest statements, even though research participants agree to their participation. With more attention to trust building with them, I participated in the counselling as a volunteer for 6 months before the research, which helped to interview them. But they were reluctant to answer the questions about abuse by their family members. Some even burst into tears. Given this, researchers who plan to study negative subjects should spend time and energy enough to build trust with participants before starting research. Additionally, various qualifications, such as open-mindedness, receptive attitude, listening skills, the ability to sympathize and a technique to lead interviews, are required for conducting interviews. Second, even though I focused on the experiences of runaway youths and examined phenomenons from their perspective only, in-depth research in the life of their parents is also needed. It can not be said that parents who ran away incites their children to run away from home. But given the indication that the phenomenon of running away implies a danger of passing from one generation to the next(Plass & Hotaling, 1995), in-depth study on the life of parents whose children ran away as one family factor is also necessary. Third, even though I focused on the runaway only, it is important to search for a specific solution through a whole experiential approach. This is because the majority of runaway youths work in entertainment establishments, are involved in prostitution, abuse alcohol or drugs, or attempt suicide.
