Residual stress is extremely important in electroforming especially in nickel because of deliberately low adhesion between electroform and th mandrel. Exessive tensile or compressive stress can cause distortion, separation problem, curing, peeling or separation of electroform prematurely from the mandrel, buckling and blistering. Nickel sulfamate bath has been widely used in electroforming because of its inherent low residual stress. Therefore in order to achieve successful electroforming, major plating parameters affecting stress as well as hardness need to be thoroughly understood.
In this study, plating parameter such as bath temperature, current density and PH were chosen. Sulfamate nickel bath contained Ni^(2+) 81g/ℓ, boric acid 36g/ℓ and wetting agent 5㎖/ℓ.
Two type of Stress sensor has been used in small beaker and 320ℓ of pilot plant electroforming bath. And their results were analysed.
Optimum plating conditions for low residual stress of 0~2,000psi were found as 50℃ and 20ASF.
Real-time stress monitor played a very important role in judging the contamination of electrolyte.
Hardness varied from 153DPH to 479DPH by changing the current density and temperature. Three distinct microstructures were observed. They are coarse columnar, fine columnar and lamellar structures. The lowest hardness of 153DPH was obtained at 30℃ and 60ASF. In this case the grain size were 17,5㎛. And the deposit showed coarse columnar structure. Whereas lamellar structure consisting of small grain of 0.33㎛ had the hardness of 479DPH. This was obtained at 60℃ and 2ASF.
Based on these fundamental data, precision electroforming of a temperature between 30℃ and 60℃ could be done successfully.
