The northeastern part of the Ulleung Basin is characterized by complicated morphology consisting of volcanic islands (Ulleungdo and Dokdo), seamounts (the Anyongbok Seamount, the Simheungtaek and the Isabu Tablemounts), and a deep pathway (Korea Gap). The crustal and flexural models and VGP (virtual geomagnetic pole) were computed for this area from gravity and magnetic anomalies. The free-air gravity anomalies of this area fairly reflect bathymetric effects. The seamounts show free-air anomalies less than expected for their physical dimensions, indicating the achievement of isostatic compensation. High Bouguer anomalies in the central part of the Ulleung Basin gradually decreases toward the Oki Bank. This feature suggests that the crust/mantle boundary is shallow in the central part of the Ulleung Basin and gets deeper toward the Oki Bank. Magnetic anomalies are complicated over the seamounts. Different magnetic anomaly patterns recognized for Dokdo and adjacent seamounts (the Isabu and the Simheungtaek Tablemounts) possibly imply that they were formed at the different times or composed of different structure. It seems that low magnetic anomalies in the Isabu Tablemount is attributed to a secondary change (metamorphism or weathering) of ferromagnetic minerals of the seamount during a long period of time. 2-D gravity modeling and inversion show that the depth of Moho is shallow in the Korea Gap and increases toward the Oki Bank and the northwestern part of Ulleungdo. In spite of their similarity in topographic expression, a large difference about 50 mGal in gravity anomaly peaks between Dokdo and the Isabu Tablemount suggests a different isostatic compensation degree. The flexural model well predicts the observed data. The best effective elastic thickness () that fits the flexural model to the observed data are 5 km, 3 km, and 2 km for Dokdo, the Simheungtaek, and the Isabu Tablemounts, respectively. Modeling results show that the flexural rigidity (or elastic thickness) of the lithosphere of Dokdo is stronger (or thicker) than the Isabu Tablemount. Consequently, the age of lithosphere of the Isabu Tablemount at the time of loading might be less than that of Dokdo. VGP for Dokdo indicates that there was a first large eruption during a normal polarity interval in which the lavas formed the base of Dokdo. Then the second large eruption during a reversed polarity interval formed the crest of Dokdo. The results of this study and the age dating of previous studies suggest that the Isabu Tablemount and the Simheungtaek Tablemount formed at 10 ± 1 Ma and 7 ± 1 Ma in normal polarity intervals, respectively. The first large eruption of Dokdo was at 5 ~ 4 Ma in a normal polarity interval and the second large eruption in a reversal interval. Ulleungdo is interpreted to have formed latest at 3 ~ 2 Ma and the Anyongbok seamount at an age between the formations of Dokdo and UIleungdo.
