As flushing rate of toilet has been increased, treatment rate is also increased at the sewage treatment plant, but in fact, most regions still depend on the night soil treatment facilities and the septic tanks. Currently there are various problems in treating the night soil. For example, it is highly concentrated wastewater containing large amounts of organic compounds and nitrogenous compounds, and it is difficult to conduct solid-liquid separation. Also, it is collected after being left for certain period of time under an anaerobic condition, resulting an odious smell and difficulties to treat and to handle. Furthermore, the night soil treatment facilities needs complicated processes by connecting more than two units, and the treatment methods vary with regions and its operation requires very advanced technologies. Hence, the present study is to investigate an appropriate operating condition when treating Coagulation and Fenton oxidation on the night soil treated water of biological nitrification/denitrified. Based on the optimal operating condition, the study is to estimate whether the existing facilities can be simplified, and whether its operation and management can obtain conveniences by reviewing the treating efficiency of the waste water when connecting both Coagulation/sedimentation process and Fenton oxidation process. To draw an optimal operating condition, the process factors for Coagulation·sedimentation treatment test consist of influent pH, the infusion amount of Alum and FeCl_(3), as flocculant, while the process factors for Fenton Oxidation test consist of influent pH, and the infusion ratio of hydrogen peroxide and Iron(Ⅱ) sulfate(FeSO_(4)·7H_(2)O). According to the results of the water quality test on the subject waste water, the value of BOD_(5) was significantly lower than that of COD_(cr), which indicated that it was composed of nonbiodegradable substances. The initial pH for single Coagulation/sedimentation treatment ranged from pH6~pH8 and the optimal input concentration of flocculant found to be about 100 mg/L. At this time, the removal efficiency of COD_(cr) was 53.3%, and that of T-N and T-P was 33.6 % and 93.2 % respectively. The optimal pH condition for single Fenton oxidation treatment was pH3, while the ratio of an oxidizer and an iron catalyst found to be 1:1. In addition, the optimal input concentration for H_(2)O_(2) and FeSO_(4)·7H_(2)O found to be 100 mg/L. At this time, the removal efficiency of COD_(cr) was 74.5 %, and that of T-N and T-P was 33.7 % and 99.4 % respectively. According to the result of combined treatment of Coagulation /sedimentation-Fenton oxidation, the removal efficiency of COD_(cr) was 86.4 %, and that of T-P was 99.4 %, which showed the highest removal efficiency. In case of T-N, when 100 mg/L of Alum and FeCl_(3) respectively were input, their respective removal efficiency found to be 34.5 % and 41.6 %. The overall removal efficiency of COD_(cr) was arranged with the order of Coagulation/sedimentation <Fenton oxidation <Coagulation/sedimentation - Fenton oxidation. For the flocculant, the treatment efficiency of FeCl_(3) was higher than that of Alum. When comparing the test results of treatment efficiency between Coagulation/sedimentation using FeCl_(3) flocculant and Fenton oxidation, the Fenton oxidation treatment showed better removal efficiency by 14.4 %. Also, When comparing the test results of treatment efficiency between Fenton oxidation and Coagulation(FeCl_(3))/sedimentation-Fnton oxidation, the Coagulation(FeCl_(3))/sedimentation-Fnton oxidation treatment showed better removal efficiency by 11.9 %. For the removal efficiency of T-N, it had lower removal efficiency with Alum than FeCl_(3). When comparing the test results between Coagulation/sedimentation using only FeCl_(3) and Fenton oxidation, it showed similar removal efficiency. However, the test result of Coagulation(FeCl_(3))/sedimentation-Fnton oxidation treatment was slightly lower. For the removal efficiency of T-P, about 80 % was removed by the Coagulation/sedimentation treatment, while about 99 % was removed by both Fenton oxidation treatment and Coagulation/sedimentation-Fenton oxidation treatment. As a result of the present study, it is estimated that the existing night soil treatment facilities can be simplified with the process of Coagulation/sedimentation-Fenton oxidation treatment. Further researches are required to find out ways to shorten the handling time and to maximize its efficiency.
