Low noise amplifiers (LNAs) are widely used in wireless communications. They can be found in almost all RF and microwave receivers in commercial applications such as cordless telephones, cellular phones, wireless local area networks, and satellite uplinks and downlinks and in military applications such as doppler radars and signal interceptors. In receiver applications, especially, LNA's are used to amplify the received low power signal and separate it from the noise floor.
In this thesis, two-stage low noise amplifier designs for 2.0 GHz utilize microstrip line matching providing a noise match at the input and a conjugate impedance match at the output. The LNAs is designed using Agilent's ADS. The LNA circuit demonstrated the performance of the ATF-35143 for an unconditionally stable, low power consumption, low noise deaign. An amplifier's performance is determined by the selection of the operating bias point. For a GaAsFET (ATF-35143), minimum noise figure is obtained at a low drain current. Nominal bias point for the ATF-35143 is a Vds of 3 volts and an Ids of 60 mA. A swept gain in the LNA is shown the gain to be a minimum of 17 dB from 2 GHz to 3 GHz. The amplifier provides a minimum noise figure slightly under 0.68 dB at midband. The broad band input noise match provides an amplifier with a 0.9 dB maximum noise figure from 2 GHz to 3 GHz. The proposed two-stage low noise amplifier is well suited for the new generation of low voltage, high frequency wireless applications.
