The frontal lobes begin to develop after birth until the late teens. With aging, however, it is the first to degenerate among all the cortical areas. This study was conducted to examine how cognitive functions in the frontal lobes change across the lifespan.
The subjects were 60 aged 6 (15 males, 15 females) and aged 9 (13 males, 17 females) children, 30 college students (14 males, 16 females), 27 middle-aged adults (10 males, 17 females), and 30 older adults (15 males, 15 females). They were given seven dorsolateral prefrontal area, one medial frontal area, and two ventral prefrontal area tests to evaluate executive functions of the frontal lobes. In addition, three motor tests were conducted to analyze the motor functions of the frontal lobes.
The results for the tests were as follows. In dorsolateral prefrontal area, five abilities (attention, working memory, verbal fluency, visuospatial reasoning, and concept formation abilities) were found to improve from childhood until early adulthood only, and henceforth gradually declined with the age. The development of the divided attention ability was similar with that of the above abtlities, except that the aptitude sustained until middle adulthood before it started to degenerate. Visuoconstructive function, deducing rules, planning of behavior to attain the goal, and self-monitoring abilities, on the other hand, only enriched during the childhood and maintained until middle adulthood before they also began to deteriorate.
The medial frontal area, which serves the automatized responses and select more appropriate responses abilities, improved from childhood to early adulthood and then declined gradually with the age. The capabilities of ventral prefrontal area, which are the impulse control and the emotion-based decision making, enhanced starting early adulthood but declined after middle adulthood.
For the motor functions, it was found that the fast and dextrous manual movements developed with the age and reached its peak at the early adulthood. It then slowly deteriorated after middle adulthood. However, the hand strength reached its peak during early adulthood and did not change until late adulthood.
The correlations among the tests for the dorsolateral prefrontal areas showed different features according to the age groups, In other words, significant correlations among the tests were found for the subjects in the childhood and early adulthood. However, they doubled for the middle and late adulthood. This age-related increase in correlations across tests reflect an age-related difficulty in engaging specialized neural mechanism, which is consistent with the dedifferentiation hypothesis (Lindenberger & Baltes, 1994).
These results suggest that the cognitive functions in the frontal lobes have different developmental trends according to the subareas of the frontal lobes that serve the specific cognitive functions. However, among the cognitive functions that the dorsolateral prefrontal area serves, three types of cognitive functions which have different developmental trends were found. This suggests that the new areas classification of frontal lobes which has more details than the previous subarea classification is needed to study the cognitive function of the frontal lobes.|
