This research describes a method to detect leaks on the surface of a wheel rim manufactured by aluminum die casting and forging. Leaks in wheel rim may be caused by temperature gradient differences in cooling period, impurities, or air bubbles flowed in die casting processes. Many researches have been performed for the leak detection of the wheel rims such as ultrasonic, eddy current, magnetic particle, liquid penetrate methods and so on. In this research, we develop a new approach with advantages of low cost and short inspection time by detecting the movement of soap bubbles on wheel rim surface. The airtight of the wheel is kept by pressing of the upper and lower plates on the wheel. The white bubbles generated with surfactant water spread on the wheel rim surface can be sprung up at the leak position due to high air pressure in the wheel rim. However, it is difficult to distinguish differences in image level of CCD camera between the bubbles and the aluminum rim due to bright reflection on the smooth and sparkle surface of the rim. A shiny cylindrical surface of the wheel produces also mirror image so that virtual images could be detected in a vision system. Thus, we have designed new light sources in order to minimize the mirror image effects and irregular luminance distribution on the curved surface of the wheel rim by using light emitted diodes. Preprocessing procedure for image processing has been also developed to detect the bubble configuration by using threshold and morphology techniques. The movement of the bubbles can be also detected in the proposed image processing algorithm, in which two image frames captured on same position at different instants have been compared to identify every bubble on the image frame and the variation of the sizes and locations. Once a leak on the surface of the rim is detected in the first step inspection, the system records the leak position in the rim for next step inspection to examine more detail image analysis. A series of experiments have been performed to evaluate the performance of the inspection system. As the results, we can conclude that the leaks generated in manufacturing processes of the wheel rim can be accurately detected even under the various lighting condition of the environments.
