The purpose of this study is to understand more about the experiences of institutionalized adolescents by signifying the meaning and essence from their early independent living. This study used Giorgi's Phenomenological research was used to conduct focusing on the meaning of the university life, existential investigating the phenomenon and reflecting and writing with a phenomenology approach.
The participants for this study composed 7 institutionalized adolescents who have already been in early independent living and who are 20-24 years old and they are from Busan. Data was collected from January 2006 to March 2006 and In-Depth interview method of a qualitative research was used mainly to examin their own personal experiences and awareness and semi-structured interviews were used to find out the meaning of early independent living and analysis easily.
Based on the consent from the interviewees, the interviews were tape-recorded and the interview results were repeatedly examined and recorded as vivid as possible. The interviews were usually held in their rooms or restaurants to give them more comfortable settings and 2-3 times, about 90-120 minuets in average.
From the analysis on the data depended on Giorgi's suggestions, there were 102 meaning statements from the 7 interviewees, through these meaningful statements, 22 could be categorized to 6 sub-constituents lastly which are, "the difficulties in readiness for independent living" "The difficulties in affection" "the difficulties in reality", "the compromises in reality" "positive changes through supporting system" and "awareness of needs to prepare for independent living".
The suggestions from this study are as follows:
In practical aspects in institute care, Firstly, focusing more on the readiness of institutionalized adolescents for independent living. Secondly, institutional support to get more participation and encouragement from their family and relatives. Thirdly, professional counselling system to help their independence and direction after residential care. Forthly, inducing small group home for institutionalized adolescents.
In national aspect, Firstly, actualizing impractical resettlement funds and deposit money for the lease of a house to actuality. secondly, providing rental house or money for the lease of a house to solve living place problems, which is the biggest, for institutionalized adolescents. Thirdly, lasting the medical insurance system for certain period of time after residental care. Fourthly, being allowed to stay under residential care for a longer period time, Fifthly, providing scholarship and school expenses for college students.
