Many commercial CAD systems are feature-based modeling systems. Each feature refers to topological entities for feature creation, and topological entities are used as operation objects (i.e. the edge of a chamfer feature), datum objects of the feature (i.e. the plane of the sketch of a protrusion feature). Identification methods of the referenced topological entities are different among CAD systems. For the exchange of parametric CAD models through a neutral format, a translator should have resources for the representation of features and also provide methods for; 1) identification of the referenced topological entities of a feature (persistent naming) and 2) conversion of the identification information through a neutral file to and from the native file of each CAD system (naming mapping). The present study adopts the macro-parametric approach as the method for the exchange of parametric CAD models and proposes a new persistent naming and its mapping mechanisms suitable for parametric CAD model exchanges. The solution to the persistent naming is made of two parts: (a) naming of topological entities based on the OSI and SN, (b) the name matching under the proposed naming. OSI is used to solve the ambiguity arising from entity splitting. SN is used to solve ambiguity arising from entity merging. SN records the merged topological entities, and OSI distinguishes topological entities that have the same basic names. The solution to the naming mapping is based on IGM (internal geometric model). IGM is a geometric model generated by a geometric modeling kernel according to the design history. The design history is in the form of a feature tree or a macro and the necessary information for naming mapping is retrieved or calculated from the IGM. The persistent naming and its mapping mechanisms proposed in the present study have been adopted into a macro-parametric translator. Validity of the proposed methods is verified through experimental translations among CATIA, UG, Pro/E, and SolidWorks.
