Poly(vinylidence fluoride)(PVDF) monofilament was prepared by melt-spinning with varying the take-up speed of filaments and the mechanical properties such as tensile, loop, and knot strength were measured using an Instron tensile tester. Particularly, the knot characteristics were compared with the tensile and loop properties in order to investigate the characteristics as a suture of PVDF filament. Structural and thermal properties were analysed with X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry, respectively. Crystal structure of PVDF filament developed in melt-spinning was αphase according to x-ray diffraction measurements. Melting temperature did not change significantly with increasing the take-up speed of filaments, but the heat of fusion calculated from the area under DSC endothermic peak increased only slightly. The tensile stress-strain curve of PVDF monofilaments showed a clear yielding phenomenon, whereas that in the loop and knot testing showed some or less smooth yielding. The tensile strength increased with increasing the take-up speed for the tensile, loop, and knot fibers as expected. The yield strength of PVDF monofilament slightly increased, however, the yield strain did not change with increasing the take-up speed within a measured range. The mechanical behavior for knotted fiber was classified into three regions according to the slope of stress-strain curve, showing the characteristics as a suture of PVDF filament.
