Ear training and sight singing is the most fundamental and important part of musical activities to develop musical sensitivities, understand music fully, and express it properly. However, there is a limitation of lessons for functional theory in actual music education in secondary schools. That is why a lot of the students lack in understanding musical notes and they are not able to singing and improvise after interpreting musical notes although they have learned music for many years.
Thus, the purpose of this study is to present teaching methods for ear training and sight singing and to help those who learn music acquire basic musical skills. Based on theories of several music pedagogists, this study has been carried out to provide some teaching methods for ear training and sight singing focusing on songs presented in a music textbook, especially the one publicized by Doosan Publishing for third graders in middle school.
When it comes to instructing rhythms for sight singing, a plan for teaching methods was analyzed based on eurhythmics representing physical reaction to rhythm originated from Dalcroze's pedagogy. Regarding melody instruction, based on Rogers' theory, students were trained to memorize melody and read musical notes through appreciating songs in the textbook instead of learning melody note by note through a teacher's guide to lead the song or accompany on the keyboard. From studying teaching methods of several pedagogists' theories on ear training and sight singing I concluded that the priority of the lesson should first be on focusing on singing a song in ear training and sight singing education.
For more effective ear training and sight singing lessons, various activities must be carried out proportionately for an hour lesson, encouraging ear training and sight singing. Above all, teachers need to be patient to wait for their students until they understand the text for themselves.
