The present day is globalization age and knowledge-based society. Culture contents in the age of limitless competition have a strong interest in traditional culture to secure competitive power. But the viewpoint of 'Our thing is the most international one' shows much tendency to appeal toward nationalism without seriously thinking about our thing. Escaping from this preponderated viewpoint, we need deep and diversified study on traditional art. We have to search for the educational value through discovery of the various materials and study on traditional art, and find information which can be introduced to class. The purpose of this study is to consider the educational value based on a chicken painting to search for the various and educational materials of traditional art.
I studied the concept, kind, characteristic of a folk painting in chapter Ⅱ. A folk painting first used by Yanagi Muneyosi, Japanese scholar, whose main artists were under the mass of people, was really drawn by Yangban's demand and spread. So a folk painting is not necessarily only the masses' culture but a traditional painting loved by the whole classes in Chosun dynasty. A folk painting has characteristics of practicality, anonymousness, symbolization, incantation, group sensibility and enlightenment. A folk painting can be classified into a painting symbolizing 'healthy and long life', 'fecundity', 'wealthy, rank and fame' and 'driving a ghost and wishing for good luck' according to the theme and into 'flowers and birds painting', 'landscape painting', 'fishes painting', 'genre painting', 'hunting painting', 'letter painting', 'Sashindo' and 'ten long-life animals painting' according to the materials.
Among the materials of a folk painting, I studied chicken closely related to our race until now, the history of a chicken painting, and the types and the characteristics of a chicken folk painting in chapter Ⅲ. Chicken was recognized as a good omen by our race because of its cry at dawn which plays a role of mediator turning from darkness to brightness. Custom putting chicken in traditional chicken fighting and on a table in wedding ceremony tells intimacy with our race and chicken during the long life. Also, chicken in creation myth and prince's birth tale in ancient three countries tell the ideal origin of a chicken painting. The types of a chicken folk painting are a chicken folk painting for driving away a ghost, for decorating flowers and birds painting, of wealth and honor, and of a charm and etc. This means diverse symbolization because the material, chicken, is practically used in a folk painting as the material of all the subjects like driving a ghost, fecundity, long life, wealth and prosperity, and achieving glory.
I divided the educational value of a folk painting into aesthetic experience, art expression and appreciation part and studied in chapter Ⅳ. When understanding life related with our ancestor's art, educational value of aesthetic experience, first, gives a chance to think and understand chicken in a new viewpoint having been together for a long time with Koreans in everyday life. Second, by understanding how our ancestors practically used a chicken painting in life, we checks how art is applied to our present life and raises the desire for practical use of beauty. Korean's consciousness for beauty through a chicken folk painting are color, warm family's beauty, being free and composure. We can feel Korean color beauty from colorful chicken and our racial consciousness for beauty from warm-hearted atmosphere and composure of chicken family.
In the expression part, chicken, the intimate material, can be expressed differently in diverse subject and has the educational value expressing and applying formative feature of a folk painting as the material of the all subject.
In appreciation part, we can see how a chicken folk painting is treated in a modern style and appreciate the way to create tradition into the present day and the case. Chicken in artwork of Ki-chang Kim, Jung-sub Lee, Korean representative artists, is re-creation for modern interpretation of color and expression, family love of symbolic meaning of chicken. A chicken painting of Picasso, Chagall is based on symbolic meaning immanent in chicken. Chicken immanent in our race can be compared with the one in western. Besides, in many artists' chicken paintings, a chicken folk painting is re-interpreted and re-created through composition, material and expression. Tradition recognizing the creative meaning of the present day has the educational value supplying diverse viewpoint of originality and idea because a chicken painting in the present day is related to a chicken folk painting, a traditional painting.
