Phase stability, oxidation behavior and the oxide characteristics of Zr-xNb alloys (x=0.1~2.0 wt.%) were studied to investigate the effect of the Nb content on the phase transformation and corrosion behavior of the Zr-Nb binary alloys. The samples were manufactured by two different processes to give the Nb-concentration in the matrix and the precipitates characteristics of the β phase (βNb, βZr). One group of the samples was annealed at 570 and 640℃ for 1000 hours after β-quenching and the other one was annealed at 570 and 640℃ during the manufacturing process. Microstructure of the alloys was changed by the manufacturing process conditions. However, in the case that the alloys reached the equilibrium state by annealing at the same temperature, the precipitate in the alloys was identified to have the same characteristics. The Nb-containing phase was not observed in the Zr-0.2 wt.% Nb alloy because the Nb content was lower than the solubility. However, the Zr3Fe precipitate was observed in this alloy even though Fe was not added. The formation of Zr3Fe resulted from the Fe in the zirconium sponge and was not affected by the annealing temperature of 570 and 640℃. In the Zr-0.8 and the 1.5 wt.% Nb alloys where the Nb content was higher than the solubility, Zr(NbFe)2 and the β phase (βNb, βZr) were observed. The Zr(NbFe)2 phase was not affected by the annealing temperature but the formation of the β phase was controlled by the annealing temperature. The βNb phase was formed by annealing at 570℃ in the α+βNb region whereas the βZr phase at 640℃ in the α+βZr region and the volume fraction of the β phase increased with an increasing Nb content. When the alloys was annealed at 570℃ in the α+βNb region after β-quenching, the βZr phase was formed in the early stage of the annealing and then transformed to the equilibrium βNb phase after 50 hours of annealing time. The size of the βNb phase was not drastically increased with an increasing annealing time. In the case of the annealing at the α+βZr region, the βZr phase was formed at the early stage of the annealing and its size increased with the annealing time. The formation of β phase resulted form the reduction of the Nb concentration in the matrix when the Nb content was higher than the solubility. The corrosion resistance of the Zr-xNb alloys was excellent when Nb content reached the maximum soluble limit in the matrix and it was improved by reducing the supersaturated Nb content in the matrix by annealing. From the view point of the precipitate characteristics, the corrosion resistance was decreased when Zr(NbFe)2 and the βZr phase were formed in the alloy, but it was increased when the βNb phase was formed. The corrosion rate was mainly affected by the supersaturated Nb content in the matrix. From the analysis of the oxide characteristics, it was found that the tetragonal ZrO2 phase was stabilized when the Nb content in the matrix remained at the maximun soluble limit but it was transformed to the monoclinic ZrO2 phase by increasing the supersaturated Nb content in the matrix. The tetragonal ZrO2 phase was more easily stabilized at the metaloxide interface and transformed to the monoclinic ZrO2 phase at the outer surface region of the oxide. The transformed fraction was increased when the Nb concentration was higher than the maximum soluble limit. The columnar oxide structure, which is known to increase corrosion resistance, was more stabile when the Nb concentration in the matrix was the maximum soluble limit. It could be suggested that the supersaturated Nb induced the growing of the equiaxed oxide structure and the βZr phase in the oxide promoted the transformation from the columnar structure to the equiaxed one. The oxidation characteristics of the (0002) basal plane and the (112̅0) prismatic plane of the Zr single crystal were studied to investigate the relationship of the matrix orientation and the oxidation characteristics. The oxidation rate of the (112̅0) prismatic plane was faster than that of the (0002) basal plane. The oxide grown at the basal plane had the preferred (200) plane of the monoclinic ZrO2, while the oxide at the prismatic plane grew at both the (200) and (002) planes of the monoclinic ZrO2. In addition, the oxide layer, which was formed from the basal plane of the matrix and had only one preferred growth plane, exhibited a higher fraction columnar oxide structure and a relatively wide range for the protective barrier layer. The columnar structure was stabilized when the oxide grew at the preferred (200) plane of the monoclinic ZrO2. It could be suggested that the characteristics of the preferred plane monoclinic ZrO2 plays a important role in controlling the oxidation characteristics of the Zr single crystal.
