(A) Study on Diagrams in Contemporary Space Design : Focused on the Diagrams of Ben van Berkel, Sejima kazuyo, MVRDV원문보기

This thesis started from a thought that a new method is required for the materialistic stratum of modern society, and the space where the change of perception deals with the materialistic stratum, and as a tool for studying this issue, a diagram which is newly highlighted in the design process by modern architects was discussed in this thesis. Accordingly, this thesis was aimed to redefine the meaning of diagram in the space of modern society and modern space design by reviewing architects' statement about a diagram as well as the diagram which is used in the design process and by examining related critics, and to identify a possibility that diverse methods of use and process can be a prolific medium of diagram. To this aim, Ben Van Berkel, Sejima Kazuyo, and MVRDV were treated among authors who use a diagram, since their design itself could be expressed as a diagram. Also, for a detailed analysis, the research was pursued centering around their works while making up for criticism about their works. Moreover, their type of using a diagram was reviewed, and their type of using a diagram used for the entire design process was also reviewed. Ben Van Berkel could create a space that can cope with the fluidic changes of modern society, and contain the acts of diverse users through a diagram that is grounded on time for reflecting the complicated spaces where numerous forces of our society are entangled with one another, by concentrating on users' kinetic movements that appear along with the passage of time. Sejima Kazuyo discovered a possibility of a new act based on user' s perception on the space with an abstract plane which was created not on the basis of cognition but on the basis of perception, and his spatial experience created a program exclusively for the space. MVRDV's diverse diagrams work as a medium that converts intangible programs which can be all demands existent in reality to be a realizable form, and create a space that has an urban continuum by playing a role as a pintle to society and extending the scope of space design to a city. In conclusion, a diagram which is used in this way in the design process, is made to propose a new type of space by flexibly opening the design process while proliferating a thinking by enabling us to treat diverse steps of design process in integrative manners through various features unique to a diagram. Also, the diagram had a possibility of narrowing the gap among theory, practice, and critics that exist in modern space design by enabling us to satisfy the demand in reality to the utmost while offering process and products with the same as the design process.
