Mountains cover 70% of Korea's terrain, and over the centuries, the mountain has become a prominent fixture in the lives and lore of the people who dwell there. In particular, Baekdusan ('White head mountain') has traditionally carried great significance for Koreans. The underlying perception persists that Baekdusan is the original ancestor of the Korean land, and honor was historically paid to it in the form of worship insacred rites and rituals. Individual travel accounts of Baekdusan are relatively few in number compared to other travel sketches, and the majority were written mostly after the 18th century. A traveler's journal uniquely creates both a literary work and a realistic record of the routes and places of sojourn. This paper reviews known travel accounts to the Baedusan mountain written in the 18~19th centuries : Kim Ji-nam's 「Bukjeongnok ('Record of the Journey North')」, Park Gwon's 「Bukjeong ilgi (Daily Diary of the Journey North)」, Hong Se-tae's 「Baekdusangi (Traveler's Journal of Baekdusan)」, Yi Ui-cheol's 「Baekdusangi (Traveler's Journal of Baekdusan)」, Park Jong's 「Baekdusan yurok (A Record of an Excursion to Baekdusan mountain)」, Seo Myeong-eung's 「Yubaekdusangi (An Excursion to Baekdusan)」and Yi Jung-ha's「Baekdusan ilgi (A Daily Diary of the Baekdusan Trip)」. Drawn from the pages of the above writings, studies were done of the authors, the travel conditions of the times, the purpose of the trips, and the authors' understanding of Baekdusan. In addition, comparative studies were done on the types of tours undertaken with the restoration of tour courses on old maps. There were many findings. First, the typical traveler's journal to Baekdusan was mostly written after the 18th century when Baekdusan emerged a focal point of borderline disputesbetween Qing China and Korea, a question first raised in the late 17th century. Second, all the authors of Baekdusan travel journals examined here believe that Baekdusan is a sacred mountain, the best mountain of Korea, and a mountain anyone would want to climb at least once in their lifetime. In addition, all 7 authors wrote about the landscape and human geographical features of the places they visited on their way to Baekdusan. Third, trips to Baekdusan were of two kinds: either on business regarding the border dispute between Qing China and Korea, or simply for sightseeing. Depending on which purpose, details ofwho accompanied the authors and how they were received by local officials varied but means of transportation and accommodation points were the same. Fourth, comparisons of trip routeson old maps reveal that Kim Ji-nam and Park Gweon took the same course, while both failed to summit Baekdusan; Kim Gyeong-mun, Yi Ui-cheol, Park Jong, Seo Myeong-eung, Yi Jung-ha reached the top of Baekdusan; Yi Ui-cheol and Park Jong took the same road for the return trip but branched off to different destinations. While the Baekdusan itinerary are deemed literary works, they are also very important references in historical geography revealing, as they inform us, of the writer's intentions to set out on such a trip, recounting their experiences, noting regional situations of the times, commenting on the passing landscape, human geographical features and other aspects of the journey. Studies on Baekdusan travel journals are sparse, though this is expected to change with the introduction of 'literary geography', a relatively new area of study, which is already encouraging various researches under way. Interest in this subject will expand proportionately.
