In this work, we studied on Al-10.0~11.5wt.%Si alloy which is widely used as materials for automotive gravity casting process. To control the internal microstructure which determines internal property and quality of materials, we tried to modify primary Al made in the initial state of solidification and studied on refining treatment of eutectic Si and modification of microstructure by controlling cooling speed of the mold. Firstly, to refine the structure of Al-10.0~11.5wt.%Si alloy, primary Al solid solution was refined using TiB. And then, changed additional proportion of Sr to modify eutectic Si into fine granular phase. As a result, we observed that a needle shaped eutectic Si had been changed into a fiber shape Si. 0.02wt.%Sr, Al-10.0~11.5wt.%Si alloy was most effectively modified and it was not effective in case of extra addition. But we also found primary Al shape which was observed regularly in normal state. Primary Al was changed into the big dendrite structure by adding Sr. To determine proper addition amount of TiB for refining primary Al solid solution, AlTiB matrix material was added on Al alloy melt. As a result, optimized microstructure primary Al was obtained by adding 0.1wt.% TiB. Secondly, the effect of fading of Sr on the microstructure was investigated under various holding times in the atmosphere. As a result, the fading effect was increased with the holding time. Especially the microstructure was not refined by Sr addition. For 4 hrs or more, This is because Sr was oxidized. Finally, the effect of cooling rate on the microstructure was examined by changing the mold temperature. The primary Al phase was very fine without segregation in the temp. from room temperature to 100℃. For 150℃ or more, however, it was coarsened and formed as a typical dendrite microstructure. This result means that the solidification occurred with coarsening the primary Al phase due to the low cooling rate leading from the increase in mold temperature.
