Recently as the environmental pollution such as the depletion of ozone layer, air pollution, and acid rain has been increasing to a global scale, the volatilization of organic solvent is regarded as one of the primary causes of the pollution. In case of general coating process, the seriousness of residual organic solvent from using plenty of MEK, Toluene, DMF, and IPA has been an issue. In this thesis, I studied the availability of silicone as an environment-friendly material and a way of coating it to meet the standard of global environmental regulation by reducing VOCs and detrimental waste. Silicone was studied as an alternative to solvent based polyurethane coating resin. Silicone itself has breathability. However, compared with PU coated breathable fabric it shows a wide difference. Therefore, by doing thin-film coating technique using silicone coating resin, the silicone-coated fabric gains a breathability and waterproofness. In this paper 6 different kinds of silicone coating resin were evaluated to find best formulation. And also some additives were mixed in silicone coating resin to meet requirement. So first 5 silicone coating resin were selected except 9050/50P A&B, it's viscosity was too low for coating. Selected silicone coating resins had proper breathability and waterproofness but these resins couldn't apply to breathable fabric because of their too low adhesion property except 3730 A&B. Silicone resin 3730 A&B had the best adhesion property. To find influence of water repellent treatment condition to silicone coated fabric used 4 kinds of different W/R treatment conditions. As a result, silicone repellent with a mixture of fluoro repellent treated fabric had good adhesion, soft handle and breathability. It was possible to make a thin-film silicone coating when using 0.8mm thickness of coating knife and then coated fabric had good breathability. At this time dry condition of coated fabric was during 2minutes at 180℃. The results of silicone coated fabric in this experiment showed the increase of tensile strength and tearing strength of both warp and weft. And waterproofness 800~1,000mmH2O, water vapour permeability 3,500~5,000g/m2·day(CaCl2 method). Also water repellency was over 90, peeling strength was 6.24N and good hydrolysis resistance. This study provided clear evidence that silicone resin have a very strong possibility that it can substitute solvent based PU for breathable fabric coating. If going on with the many studies on silicone coating, silicone will become another main material for breathable coating because of it's environment friendly feature.
