This study was carried out to discuss the characteristics of the flora on the mountain area of Mt. Deogyu, located on the border of Jeonbuk and Kyungnam provinces. A total of 12 field surveys was done from Sept. 2005 to Sept. 2006 at various sites of the mountain. The number of vascular plants collected and identified during the study period, was 33 taxa of ferns and fern allies belonging to 12 families, 16 genera and 34 species, 6 taxa of gymnosperms belonging to 3 families, 6 genera, 5 species and 1 variety, 403 taxa of dicotyledons belonging to 67 families, 190 genera, 347 species, 1 subspecies, 49 varieties and 6 forms, and 102 taxa of monocotyledons belonging to 8 families, 55 genera, 92 species, and 9 varieties. In total, 546 taxa of vascular plants belonging to 90 families, 267 genera, 479 species, 2 subspecies, 59 varieties and 6 forms were recognized. Among them, 29 endemic plants and 3 legally protected plants were included. Above 1000 meters of Mt. Deogyu range, mostly northern floristic elements which include Quercus mongolica Fisch. ex Ledeb., Saxifraga oblongifolia Nakai, Saxifraga octopetala Nakai, Tilia amurensis Rupr., Scabiosa tschiliensis Gru¨ning, Scopolia japonica Maxim., Symlocarpus nipponicus Makino and Lilium cernum Kom. were distributed. Below 1,000 meters, southern floristic elements of Juniperus rigida Siebold & Zucc., Cephalotaxus koreana Nakai, Lindera obtusiloba Blume, Styrax obassia Siebold & Zucc., Staphylea bumalda DC. and Callicarpa japonica Thunb. were inhabited. Floristically, therefore, Mt. Deogyu belongs the south region and middle subregion. Some noticeble plants were also found: Scabiosa tschiliensis Gru¨ning and Saxifraga octopetala Nakai were reported from Mt. Deogyu for the first time through this study. Scabiosa tschiliensis is usually distributed in north of Kangwon province and Mt. Halla and Saxifraga octopetala Nakai, endemic and northern florsitic element, is distributed in high mountain areas of Kyungbuk and Chungbuk provinces.
