Carbon/carbon(C/C) composites as a new essential material in the field of high-technology industries require durable heat-resistance at high temperature. It has been used in space, aeronautic and defense fields. In particular, this material has excellent properties in friction, abrasion and thermal shock resistance and therefore it had been used for carbon brakes of fighters, large passenger planes, etc. since 1970's.
The purpose of this study was to fabricate the carbon nanotube(CNT) reinforced C/C composites by impregnation or in-situ deposition of carbon nanotubes inside three dimensional (3D) preform for the improvement of thermal properties and characterize them. CNT reinforced C-C composites were prepared by the immersion of CNT in the C/C composites and in situ deposition of CNT using catalyst in the TG-CVI (Thermal Gradient Chemical Vapor Deposition) process. For making CNT reinforced C/C composites using impregnation process, CNT and epoxy resin were immersed in 3D preform and C/C composites with different densities. The thermal conductivity of all specimens was found increased after impregnation of CNT. Especially, in case of 1.0 wt%, the amount of increment of thermal conductivity was the highest.
For in-situ deposition of carbon nanotubes, three kinds of catalysts were used. The Ni compound showed good catalytic efficiency for manufacturing CNT reinforced C/C composites. Pyrolitic carbon was deposited around the carbon fibers in the 3D preform, and also the CNT on the carbon fiber and matrix surface. The long CNT was 25~50 ㎚ in diameter and several ㎜ in length, and the short CNT was under 10 ㎚ in diameter and several ㎛ in length.
The present study showed that C-C composites with nano scale fillers such as CNT had superior thermal properties and in situ CNT deposition method turned out to be very efficient way to make CNT reinforced C-C composites.
