Six sigma quality management is considered as one of most powerful tools for quality improvement technique since Motorola introduced six sigma quality program in 1987. Today six sigma quality management is widely used in various fields in industry, both manufacturing firms and service sectors. Many firms have reported that they achieved high quality improvement and performance in management through six sigma quality management. In Korea, six sigma quality management is also widely implemented in various fields in industry since Samsung Electrical Co. introduced six sigma quality management in 1996. Many Korean firms have also reported high performance through six sigma quality management. However, most of Korean firms adapt a uniform six sigma education system proposed by six sigma consulting company without consideration of unique features of individual firms. This aspect causes some negative effects on performance; such as, negative attitude to six sigma implementation, low performance from six sigma management, and so forth. Obviously the implementation strategy and education system of six sigma should be revised so that an individual firm introduce six sigma management technique based on the unique condition of firm. In this paper, the six sigma education systems in Korean six sigma consulting firms are reviewed and compared. This paper presents a standard six sigma education model for efficient implementation in Korean manufacturing firms. The proposed six sigma education model in this paper can be commonly applied to other countries in Asia. According to the results of lots of study on six sigma, factors for successful implementation of six sigma program can be summarized as follows; right leadership, right road-map, right people, right system, right project and right culture, etc. However, most of researchers emphasize the six sigma education before implementing six sigma management program. In this paper, we examine the six sigma education systems of representative six sigma consulting firms in Korea, especially, the six sigma education system for manufacturing firms in Korea, and then, develop a standard six sigma education system for manufacturing firms in Korea. For the purpose of research objects, seven representative six sigma consulting were investigated; Korea Standard Association(KSA), Korea Management Association Consulting(KMAC), Sigma Forum, Korea Standard Association Consulting(KSAC), SM Consulting, SE Consulting and TMI Consulting. The findings from the analysis are as follows; first, the class hours are quite different either consulting firms or six sigma belts, and second, the curriculums are also very different either consulting firms or six sigma belts. Obviously, more standard six sigma education system should be developed for efficient six sigma implementation. According to the analyses, a standard six sigma education system should be designed for efficient implementation of six sigma. This paper proposes a rational six sigma education system for each belt. In this paper, we recommend 24 class hours for White Belt certification Also 40 class hours are recommended for Green Belt and 144 class hours are recommended for Black Belt. The proposed curriculum and class hours are a standard six sigma education program for each belt. It is obviously revised in accordance with the condition of firm, for example, the size of firm, business type and other factors. Six sigma quality management is regarded as one of the most powerful technique to improve quality and productivity. Although six sigma quality management is an excellent tool for high quality, it should be used in accordance with the condition of company. Among the factors for successful implementation of six sigma, the education system is considered as the most important factor. In this paper, the six sigma education systems of representative consulting firms in Korea were reviewed and compared. According to the results of analyses, the curriculum and class hours were quite different from consulting firm to consulting firm. The purpose of this paper was to develop a standard six sigma education system for manufacturing firms in Korea. However, the proposed education systems in this paper can be applied to other countries in Asia. Although the proposed six sigma education system in this paper is not an absolute system, it would be one of guideline for efficient six sigma educaton.
