Objectives To evaluate karyotypes and incidence of the chromosomal abnormalities from chorionic villi in missed abortions of gestational age from 8 to 15 weeks. Methods Chromosomal analysis was done on chorionic villi of abortus from February, 2000 to December, 2004. 82 cases were analyzed but 76 cases were included and 6 cases were excluded due to culture failure and missing data. Results Thirty one (40.8%) out of 76 cases were normal, forty five (59.2%) showed chromosomal abnormalities. Most common abnormalities were autosomal trisomy 16 (15 cases, 33.3%), followed by trisomy 22 (5 cases, 11.1%), 45, X (4 cases, 8.9%). Each 2 cases (4.4%) of trisomy 14, triploidy 69, XXY, inversion 9 were noted. And each 1 case (1.3%) of trisomy 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 12, 18, 20, 21, tetraploidy 92, XXXX, triploidy 69, XXX, deletion 21, 8, 15 was identified. There was no statistical difference of age of patients, gestational age at abortion, number of previous spontaneous abortion between normal and abnormal karyotypes. Conclusion A total of 59.2% of the cases with missed abortion had an abnormal karyotype. Chromosomal analysis of aborted fetus is important for prognostication because it gives information on frequency and type of chromosomal abnormality, on etiology and risk assessment for future pregnancies.
