Ceramics have been used as armor materials over 50 years ago due to high strength with low density. Many weapon systems where ceramics are adopted have been developed and stationed in the field from the personal armor jacket to the fighter helicopters and newly developed tanks. The most widely used ceramic is alumina. It has good protection capability and low manufacturing cost. The fracture mechanism of armor material is known to be very complicated. Therefore, there exists not many systematic research conducted on this area. The high velocity impact resistance of material is used to evaluate armor materials. For the ceramic, to be employed as an armor material, it has to meet the following conditions; First, it must have a large reduction capability of shock waves. Second, it must effectively reduce the high velocity longitudinal and shear waves, and strengthen the dynamic fracture stress. Finally, it must be easily transformed into comminuted granular powder and be spreaded out with high velocity. A material which withstands against a kinetic energy projectile or a shaped charge jet can bear the pressure of shock waves for at least 10^(-6) seconds and demolish the projectile head. Therefore, hard phase material with a high compressive strength is needed to eliminate a shock compressive energy. In order to disturb the continuously penetrating projectile, high rate of instantaneous compression-expansion is needed. In order to protect a kinetic energy projectile and a shaped charge jet, the armor material has to have a hard phase and a glass phase simultaneously. The nitrogen was introduced to parent glass to form a oxynitride glass for strengthen the glass. The hardness and compressive strength of oxynitride glass were increased up to 21% and 50%, respectively. The resistance property of oxynitride glass against high velocity copper jet was 30% higher than that of parent glass. Two different manufacturing methods were used to produce glass-composites; one is the crystallization of glass and the other is viscous flow sintering of glass-SiC composite. The high velocity impact resistance property of glasses and crystallized glasses developed during this research showed equal to or greater than that of alumina-silica ceramic which has an excellent ballistic property. The glass-SiC composite was developed by adding SiC powder as a reinforcing agent to soda-lime-silicate glass powder. The 99.2% of theoretical density was achieved when 5 wt% of SiC was added to glass powder by the following sintering conditions; the rearrangement at 460℃ for 3 hrs. and sintering at 665℃ for 1 hr.. The impact resistance property of glass-SiC composite could not be measured because of voids inside large size sample. It is expected that the glass-SiC composite is an excellent candidate material for armor application. In this research, a systematic research was made for the development of improved ceramic armor material where the glassy phase and hard phase exist simultaneously.
