Layered double hydroxide(LDH) is a class of ionic lamellar solids with positively charged layers with two kinds of metallic cations and exchangeable hydrated gallery anions. Interest in hydrotalcites and derived materials arises from the wide applications as catalyst supports, processing of selective chemical nanoreators, separation and membrane technology, filtration, scavenging and controlled release of anions, electroactive and photoactive materials, etc for the environmental and biomedical field due to the anion exchange capabilities with organic or inorganic anions. In this study, the optimum synthesis condition for nano-sized LDH and its characterization through coprecipitation and hydroxide method have been studied. In the coprecipitation method, the salt mixture of magnesium nitrate and aluminum nitrate were mixed with the mixture of sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate at maintaining pH condition with molar ratio of Mg/Al = 1.5 ~ 3, 25 ~ 150 ℃ aging for 24 hrs, and drying at 25 - 100 ℃, which produced nano-size LDH in the range of 5 ~ 50 nm of prinmary particles and 130 ~ 200 nm of secondary particles, which was measured by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and electrophoretic light scattering method. LDH preparation from starting materials of magnesium hydroxide and aluminum hydroxides has been studied as well as co-precipitation for the economical production of LDH. It was sucessfully synthesized by hydrothermal treatment at 170 ~ 190 ℃ for 2 ~ 3 hrs. The thermo- gravimetric(TG) analysis revealed the endothermic peak at around 450 ~ 500 ℃ by dehydroxylation, which could be the indication of the possibility of LDH as more effective flame retardant than magnesium hydroxide or aluminum hydroxide. The effect of milling on the starting materials and the mixture slurry have been tested with regular ball mill and high energy planetary mill. The milling method was effective to mix homogeneously, to reduce the size of starting materials, and also to induce mechanochemical reaction. The intermediate phase of magnesium carbonate was observed, which is supposed to speed up the dissolution of magnesium hydroxide and finally disappearred by emerging amorphous phase of magnesium aluminum hydroxide. The residual reactants in the final product was reduced and also there was decrease in final average particle size of LDH. However, the LDH prepared from hydroxides was not as small as that from co-precipitation method. The anion exchange capacity was decreased with increase of particle size of LDHs prepared from nitrates by co-precipitation but it was not as distinct in LDH prepared from hydroxide precursors.
