Since the discovery of a carbon nanotube in 1991, there have been many researches going on in the world. In the initial stage, the studies were concentrated on its physical phenomena. Currently the focus has moved to application and commercialization, such as field emission display electronic devices, nano electronic devices, fuel cells, the tips of scanning probe microscopes(SPM), and nanocomposites. A carbon nanotube grows through a series of steps from a decomposition of hydrocarbons to diffusion, saturation, and precipitation of carbon atoms. The location of a catalytic metal determines the growth mode of carbon nanotube; the root growth mode or head growth mode. Since the characteristics of field emission and physical features of a carbon nanotube are different according to the growth mode, it's essential to identify the growth mode. But it was extremely difficult to identify a growth mechanism of a carbon nanotube when dispersion method was used for sample preparation in TEM analysis. In this study we tried a sectional sample preparation method for a transmission electron microscopy. As a result, the location information of a catalyst and substrate of carbon nanotube was obtained by a transmission electron microscopy without braking the nanotubes from the substrate. Another trial was synthesis of a carbon nanotube by a plasma chemical vapor deposition method. Compared to the thermal chemical vapor deposition method, it enabled the carbon nanotube to grow at lower temperatures. Also, nanotubes grew in a direction of electric field between the anode and cathode. The early growth behaviors were observed with a transmission electron microscopy(TEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy(HREM), scanning transmission electron microscopy(STEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry(EDS). In case of invar alloy, chrome in the electrode layer reacted with the silicon in the substrate during the pretreatment process and formed chrome silicide. Since the silicide affects the electric conduction of the chrome film and are expected to further affect the characteristics of field emission, silicide formation should be considered in designing an electronic device. Hybrid carbon nanotubes were synthesized in two steps of processing: first the plasma chemical vapor deposition and second, thermal chemical vapor deposition. Secondary carbon nanotubes grew from the points on the outer wall of primary grown carbon nanotubes where catalyst particles exist. The field emission was ~3V/μm, which was superior to 4.5V/μm with the plasma chemical vapor deposition method or 3.5V/μm with the thermal chemical vapor deposition method. The three-dimensional images of a carbon nanotubes were obtained by using the 3D electron tomography The catalytic metals inside the carbon nanotubes were clearly identified. The 3D images were comprised of nano-size particles. The 3D electron tomography would have much implication since it suggested the potential of 3D image for a nano-size structure.
