In the discussion, I shed lights on the artistic role of Cho Seok-jin, a painter who served for the royal court in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries in a close relation with Korean modern art scene. Cho Seok-jin was a court painter in the late nineteenth-century Choson dynasty, a period that saw the demolition of social hierarchy and the decline of the court-painter system. However, he did not remain behind the ever changing art scene, but rather continued to explore new pictorial expressions and expand artistic horizon. When Cho Seok-jin visited Kikiguk(기기국) at Tenjin in 1881, he experienced international affairs at the first hand. After staying one year in China, he returned and continued to work for the court, fulfilling his duty as the last court painter. His knowledge of traditional paintings through his experience as a court painter enabled Cho Seok-jin to actively work as an excellent educator. He expressed his artistic experiments by educating his students. It is significant that Cho Seok-jin''s such artistic activities not only influenced the styles of his students, but also contributed to create a bridge between traditional and modern art scenes during a period that saw the emergence of new visual media and the awareness of the importance of fine art education. It is worth noticing that the artistic heritage from Kim Hong-do, Cho Jeong-kyu, Yu-suk, and Jang Seong-up contributed to the formation of his artistic point of view as well as his aesthetics. In the discussion of his figure paintings, I attempt to examine how the painter perceived and understood new artistic expressions such as realism of photographies and pictorial expressions of oil paintings. Following the footstep of his grandfather Cho Jeong-kyu, Cho Seok-jin participated in a series of painting royal portraits and finally achieved his artistic fame. Besides portraits, he was also good at Taoist figure paintings and Figure in landscape paintings. Cho Seok-jin borrowed composition and figure types from painting manuals and continued to employ them for his figure paintings. This could be indebted to the commercial condition of early twentieth century art scene as well as his prominent artistic career in the court. His artistic expressions firmly founded on both traditional and newly introduced pictorial continued to be valid through the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Photography, new artistic styles introduced from Qing China and Japan, and various painting manuals contributed to his distinctive artistic style. In particular, painting manuals published in Shanghai gave a strong influence on the composition and figure types of Cho Seok-jin''s paintings. Cho Seok-jin, an artist active in between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, selectively adopted traditional pictorial languages and newly introduced expressions, and interpreted them in his own terms. However, it still seems to be true that new pictorial expressions were rather limitedly explored in his painting possibly for his strong association with traditional art form. His artistic eclecticism reveals Cho Seok-jin''s artistic capability to satisfy the artistic expectation of his patrons and his perspective on art as a court painter.
