The damage of papal relics usually comes in the way that the primal ingredients such as cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin as well as second ingredients and outer environmental elements are disintegrated to lose their permanency. A papal relic made of cellulose can be thermo-disintegrated by the high temperature, and degraded in its physical nature through the photo-disintegration by the visible and ultraviolet rays. In addition, its color can be changed by coloring substances, and splitted through the acidification by acids. To retard the rate of acidification, we can use the treatment to remove acids from it. That is, we can use alkaline solutions to stabilize the relics. There are several substances that are used to treat for the preservation of papal relics and documents. They includes distilled water, magnesium, calcium carbonate and traditional ash water. In this dissertation, the above materials have made soaked into the ordinary paper and Korean paper to check their influence to the respective paper. I checked the physical change after coercive aging through it for 504 hours. As a result of color change experiment and pH measurement, I found that the used alkaline solutions prevents the acidification of paper by staying in the tissue. In the moisture and weight experiments, there have been no significant change; but a little change in the ordinary paper where its thickness was increased through the expansion of pulp by the moisture after the chemical treatment. In addition, the SEM photograph showed some white parts in the papal tissue that did not exist before the chemical treatment. I checked the white parts through EDS and found out that they were the crystallization of treating chemicals. Among the used chemicals, the distilled water and calcium carbonate were stable in the papal color change. The degree of retarding the pH is determined by the original pH of treating chemicals. The ash water of bean has a bad influence in the color change, so it will be better not to use it. The kinds of paper are so diverse according to the manufacturing method, process, additive, and raw material that there can be no one determined preservation method for them. But, in my experiment some problems have been discovered. The examples are the thickness change by excessive moisture and the color change by the chemical solution. This paper also presents the numerical data for the retardation of acidification rate through the alkaline solution in the paper, which can be helpful in the future research for removing treatment of the acidic material in the papal relics.
