(A) Study on the effect of the water purification capacity by aquatic plants and foamed glass : The case of Lythrum anceps, Pistia straiotes L., Oenanthe javanica, and Phragmites japonica Steud원문보기

In this study the nutrition uptake capacity of aquatic plants, i.e, Lythrum anceps, Pistia straiotes L., Oenanthe javanica, and Phragmites japonica Steud., was investigated by analyzing nutrition removing efficiency from stagnant artificial aquatic environment. The use of foamed glasses made waste glasses was also studied for supplemental nutrition removal capacity for possible application as support materials of aquatic plants. The results are as follows: 1. The T-N removal efficiency of aquatic plants when foamed glasses were used as support materials showed 91% for Lythrum anceps and 93% for Phragmites japonica Steud.. Similar removal efficiency was observed as 94% for all aquatic plants planted as a group used in this study. 2. The T-P removal efficiency of aquatic plants when foamed glasses were not used showed 35% for Lythrum anceps, 8% for Phragmites japonica Steud.; however, that, when foamed glasses were used, ranged 78% for Lythrum anceps, 43% for Phragmites japonica Steud., showing that the foamed glasses increase the T-P removal efficiency of aquatic plants used in this study. 3. The T-N uptake rate of aquatic plants for both stems and roots considered to be higher for Oenanthe javanica planted individually and all aquatic plants planted as a group. In case of T-P, the uptake rate showed the highest value at 57% for stems of Phragmites japonica Steud. and 72% for rate of Lythrum anceps. 4. The COD removal capacity of aquatic plants when foamed glasses were not used showed 56% for Pistia straiotes L., 48% for Phragmites japonica Steud., and 41% for Oenanthe javanica, but no significant COD removal was observed for Lythrum anceps. When the foamed glasses were used as support materials, the COD removal efficiency increased for all aquatic plants used in this study showing 69% for Pistia straiotes L., 68% for Phragmites japonica Steud., 62% for Oenanthe javanica., respectively. The results suggest that the foamed glasses increase the COD removing efficiency of aquatic plants.
