Today's growing elderly population and increased life span have drawn attention to the quality of life in old age. Elderly people generally lead a lonely life due to the death of their spouses or friends, and their loneliness, sense of alienation and loss of roles are emerging as part of serious social issues. Dating among elderly people is highlighted as a solution to work out those problems. A sound dating could let elderly people find their lives more rewarding and dynamic, and that could satisfy their needs for affection as well, which will, in turn, make them feel delight and happy. The purpose of this study was to examine how bereaved elderly people who dated and who didn't perceived dating in an effort to root out any social prejudice against their dating, to help prepare efficient dating policies and programs, and to determine some of the right directions for dating among the elderly. The subjects in this study were 30 elderly people who parted with their spouses by death. Out of them, 15 people had a date, and the others hadn't. After having one-one-one interview with them, the following findings were given: First, the elderly people who dated felt forlorn a lot after being bereaved of their spouses. The death of spouses left a great deal of loneliness to them, and they were much interested in dating and took a positive view of it. When they were all alone, they mostly visited welfare facilities or met their friends. As for the motivation of dating, they wanted a companion to get rid of their loneliness, and this finding implied that the bereaved elderly people wanted dating because of loneliness. They got to know their dates in diverse ways. Some met their dates at a senior center or social gathering, or their friends set them up with them. But their adult children scarcely set them up with anybody, which showed the unfavorable way people looked at dating among elderly people. More than half the elderly people had a sexual relationship with their dates, and dating made all of them highly satisfied with their lives. Second, most of those who didn't date lived with their adult children under the same roof. Although they didn't feel as lonely as those who dated, they felt isolated as well. They didn't take a dismal view of dating, and when they were forlorn, they showed a similar reaction as the others who dated, as they visited welfare facilities, met their friends or attended a social gathering. As to why they didn't date anybody, the largest group cared about their adult children. Concerning their willingness for dating in the future, many of them didn't have any intention to do that. Those who were willing to date considered it possible to have a sexual relationship, and they believed that it would boost their life satisfaction. Those findings indicated that even the elderly people who didn't date viewed dating positively. The above-mentioned findings suggested that dating contributed to elevating the bereaved elderly people's quality of life. Those people wanted a dependable friend of the opposite sex to lean on, and they met their dates and had a sexual relationship with them mostly because of loneliness. And dating helped them to be more satisfied with their lives. To stir up sound dating among elderly people, elderly people themselves should be encouraged to change their mind-set, and their families should be understanding and assist their dating. In social welfare sector, counseling centers that could give them advice about dating and sex should be increased, and required professionals should be nurtured. Besides, educational and family programs should be provided to them.
