The long-term trends of global solar irradiance(285-3000 ㎚), terrestrial(downward longwave) irradiance(4-50 ㎛), air temperature, specific humidity and cloudiness measured at King Sejong station, Antarctica, during the period of 1988-2006, have been examined. A multiple linear regression model has been developed in order to evaluate the relative contribution of each of the variables to the variation of downward longwave irradiance. Therefore, it can be examined seasonal variability of the surface radiation balance at the King Sejong Station for the period of 1996-2006.Annual average of global solar irradiance at the surface is 81.2 Wm-2 with a monthly maximum of 187.4 Wm-2 in December and a minimum of 8.1 Wm-2 in June. A statistically insignificant decrease, -0.24 Wm-2yr-1(-0.29 %yr-1) in global solar irradiance was found. The trends in global solar irradiance are directly and inversely associated with the cloudiness trends in annual and monthly means, whereas surface air temperature shows a slight warming trend, 0.03 ℃yr-1(1.71 %yr-1) on the annual average, with cooling in the summer months and warming in the winter months.Recent total ultraviolet irradiance shows 6.2 Wm-2 on the average and annual mean increasing at 0.14 Wm-2yr-1(2.21 %yr-1) in the time series of monthly mean values. Recent erythemal ultraviolet irradiance shows 1.2 mWm-2 on the average and a statistically significant decrease of -0.04 mWm-2yr-1(-1.18 %yr-1) which is about ten times the global solar irradiance trend. The ratio of erythemal ultraviolet to global solar irradiance shows remarkable seasonal variations with annual mean value of 0.01 % and a peak around the October and November showing the increase of ultraviolet irradiance resulting from the Antarctic ozone hole.Annual mean of downward longwave irradiance(DLR) shows 279.7 Wm-2, and annual mean trends in DLR shows a statistically significant decrease of -1.52 Wm-2yr-1(-0.54 %yr-1) in the time series of monthly mean values. Effects of air temperature, specific humidity and cloudiness on the variation of DLR and their long-term trends have been examined using the daily and monthly mean values measured at King Sejong Station over the period of 1996-2006. A multiple linear regression model for DLR using daily data for three variables has been developed to evaluate their effects on the DLR. The respective contribution of air temperature, specific humidity and cloudiness to the variation of DLR was 6%, 46 % and 23 %, respectively. The monthly average for DLR cloud forcing at the surface is 52 Wm-2 (23 %) and 65 Wm-2 (29 %) for cloudy conditions (all skies) and overcast skies, respectively.Annual average of the net shortwave radiation shows 51.7 Wm-2 with 92.5 Wm-2 in summer(from October to March) and 10.9 Wm-2 in winter(from April to September). Annual average of the net longwave radiation shows 30.0 Wm-2 with 28.8 Wm-2 in summer and 31.1 Wm-2 in winter. Thus, the net radiation shows 21.7 Wm-2 on the annual average with 64.6 Wm-2 in summer and -20.1 Wm-2 in winter. And annual average of sensible, latent and ground heat flux shows 18.7 Wm-2, 3.1 Wm-2, -0.06 Wm-2 with 47.4 Wm-2, 16.0 Wm-2, 0.19 Wm-2 in summer and -10.1 Wm-2, -9.7 Wm-2, -0.32 Wm-2 in winter, respectively. Accordingly, the annual average energy balance is dominated by radiative warming of a positive net radiation and cooling of a negative net radiation. The net radiation gain and loss at the surface is mostly balanced by turbulent flux of sensible and latent heat.
