G.Henle.

As the age of piano started with the gravicembalo col piano, e forte invented by Bartolomeo Cristfori (1655-1730) in 1709, the piano became the main medium of keyboard music. Especially, the pedal, which might be the biggest difference from the previous keyboard instrument, plays an important role in enhancing the pianistic expression. It is very important to study on the development of pedal and pedaling as they play an essential part in the expression of piano music played on the modern piano. Ludwig van Beethoven(1770-1827) was not only a pioneer who continued to study the mechanism of the piano, but also a composer who raised the importance of using the pedal for various expressions in the piano, opening the age of rich expression through the pedaling. This thesis reviewed the types of pedals and their usage in the modern piano and examined the piano used by Beethoven to find out how he used the pedal according to the change of piano mechanism and piano pedal pursued by him at that time. The pedal indicated Beethoven was examined through the urtext issued by G. Henle Verlag and it came to be known that he pursued various sounds by using the damper pedal, una corda pedal and action shifting pedal. Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 31 Op.110 in A♭ Major (1821) that is abstruse in piano technique as well as in compositional devices among the sonatas in his last years, especially showing the completeness of all his musical techniques was selected and its formal structure was briefly reviewed. This study also attempted to help the pianists to carry out the right interpretation and performance of the work through the accurate pedaling by comparing Henle's urtext edition with Tovey and Schnabel editions.
