The objective of this study is to assess arsenic and heavy metals leaching behavior in contaminated soils of abandoned metalliferous mines. Eighteen soils and tailings samples were taken at 9 mines in Kangwondo, Chungchongbukdo, Chungchongnamdo and kyangsangbukdo provinces. The pH value, Korean Standard Leaching Test(KSLT), the domestic standard method for soil(0.1M HCl), foreign method of mixed acid(aqua regia) and leaching method(SPLP and TCLP) were measured. And then, the pH values remeasured. In addition, chemical compositions of As and heavy metals in the samples using AAS. The pH value of soils and tailings were decreased with increasing acid concentration. In spite of pH=1 for soils extracted by 0.1N HCl theoretically, the pH va;ues were in the range of 2 to 8 due to buffering effect of carbonates in the samples. According to the concentration of each leaching method by pH value, the samples were divided by three group such as less than 5, 5to 8 and over 8 of pH in the samples. The sample of pH value less than 5 was no more than change amounts of heavy metals leaching by weakly acid. But amounts of heavy metals was rapidly increased by strong acid above 1M. The sample of pH value between 5 and 8 was easily leachable than that of less than 5 at weakly acid. The sample of pH value over 8 was easily leachable than that of less than 8. The amount of heavy metals were leached that hardly leachable by buffering effect of carbonate mineral at weakly acid. Leaching amount by strong acid can be ignored buffering effect of carbonate mineral. In comparison to extraction ratio with aqua regia, the ratio for Cd was similar to TCLP and 3M HCl. The ratio for Pb and Ni, however, was rapidly increased at extraction solution of over 0.5M HCl in Au-Ag mines. Like Au-Ag mines, extraction amounts of Cu, Pb and Zn in soil samples from metalliferous mines was increased at over 0.1M HCl and those of Ni at above TCLP. The leaching ratios of cadmium was no more than change between TCLP and 3M HCl, and lead, nickel was rapidly increased at above 0.5M HCl in Au-Ag mine. And the leaching ratios of cadmium was like result of Au-Ag mine, and copper, lead, zinc was increased at above 0.1N HCl, and nickel was increased at above TCLP in the others metal mines. The leaching ratios of arsenic were increased at 0.5M HCl in Au-Ag mine and the others metal mines, but the ratios was less than 70% at amounts of heavy metals extracted by aqua regia.
