Conventional processes of hydrogen production are among major producers of CO₂ emissions. CO₂-free production of hydrogen via thermocatalytic decomposition of hydrocarbon has under a hot discussion these years. During hydrogen decomposition process, carbon blacks were chosen as the main catalysts because the application of these spent carbon blacks in reinforcement of rubber could substantially reduce the net cost of hydrogen production. With the aim of finding suitable conditions for decomposition reaction to cut down the net cost for hydrogen production, carbon blacks after used as catalysts in hydrocarbon decomposition under different operation conditions (such as decomposition temperature, reaction time, and hydrocarbon precursor) were mixed with different rubber matrixes. The specific surface area of carbon black increased with low weight gain in methane decomposition caused by carbon deposits on the surface of carbon black particles, and the decrease of specific surface area with further weight gain might be caused by the carbon particles adhering to each other. The same result was obtained for mixture gas of methane and propane decomposition. The specific surface area of carbon black always decreased with the development of propane decomposition reaction. At the same loading ratio, the carbon black/rubber composites filled by carbon blacks with low weight gain in methane and methane-propane mixture gas decomposition showed higher tensile strength than those filled by raw carbon blacks, but there was no significant differences in modulus at 300% strain. With the increase of carbon blacks loading ratio in all composites, the tensile strength always increased for NBR, but it showed maximum values at 40 phr for SBR. The surface resistivity of composites showed that it was much easier for carbon blacks with low weight gain in methane and methane-propane mixture gas decomposition to dissipate well in the in rubber system. To gain further investigation in the reinforcement action of carbon blacks, the raw carbon blacks were treated by heat, acid and base, respectively. Although specific surface area of carbon blacks increased after surface modification, there were no obvious changes in resistivity. The composites filled by heat and base treated carbon blacks showed higher tensile strength and elongation than those filled by raw blacks. The acid treated carbon blacks filled composites also showed higher tensile strength, but similar elongation values with those filled by raw blacks. With increasing loading ratio, both tensile strength and elongation increased, and appeared a maximum value at 30-40 phr. Modulus at 300% strain remained increasing with further loading. The heat treated black filled composites showed similar modulus values with the composites filled by raw blacks, but for the base and acid treated black filled composites much higher values were obtained. After surface modification, the functional groups which played an important role in reinforcement action were changed.
