Many companies have manual or some standalone system in each department such as an accounting package. Usually, these systems have little or no integration which leads delays and duplication of work. Many standalone systems made own island of information. That makes many problems as follows; • Little interaction between divisions • Far from optimal • Little or no collaboration • Specialized for specific divisions • No analytic data, just acquisition • Also, has low performance. For example, reporting the consolidated information to the top management becomes a project. In the case of inventory Management, keeping the available stocks and optimum level of inventory, different stocks for different categories of ships and items, reorder of items, tracking design change and production flow can be a project to develop. While big companies may have some competitive advantages over smaller ones, they normally have more complicated operational problems. And Korean shipbuilders are not an exception. To assess the internal problems there were some points of concern; Employees were getting older. The average age was already over 40. While they were quite skillful and diligent, it was hard to expect them to work harder. The market required us to build a more varied portfolio of products than before, which led to more complicated operation. Productivity was stagnant during the previous three years. Information in the company was not integrated and standardized. Information was generated and transmitted in complicated ways and even in ambiguous manners. The management system was useful only for local optimization. It couldn’t provide appropriate information for the sake of the entire company. Under such conditions, there was no guarantee of Korean shipbuilder’s prosperity after 10 or 20 years. It was necessary to do something to break through the barriers we faced. Hence, one of the Korean major shipbuilding companies, DSME, decided to introduce the ERP system in spite of its intrinsic risks. SAP R/3 was chosen as the ERP software package and applied to the “whole” operations in shipbuilding process. There are some shipbuilding companies to partially apply the ERP system, but this study case is the first and only company to apply it to a company’s whole operations. It’s composed of three parts; SAP R/3, legacy system, and engineering BOM. Interface between SAP R/3 and legacy and engineering BOM was covered by EAI. A packaged ERP system fits best for businesses with standardized working process such as banking or automobile manufacturing. Unfortunately, process standardization in shipbuilding business is rather limited. For example, all the products at the shipyard should pass different production processes. Moreover, design, procurement and production are normally performed at the same time. Because of this fact, it is inevitable to make frequent changes due to design or planning mistakes or some other reasons. But existing ERP software is not that effective in handling those kinds of changes. To overcome these difficulties this paper suggests three basic frameworks such as CG (Cost Generator), WBS (Work Breakdown Structure), and Standard Data/ Information. From the introduction of the ERP system, all the information on design, planning, procurement, production, human resource, finance, etc., are not only integrated in one data base, but also related with one another systematically under ERP environment. This leads to a dramatic improvement in data quality and consistency. The ERP system enables us to easily and exactly judge the influence of a certain managerial decision on the entire company. Each organization becomes able to make decisions in terms of global optimization instead of local optimization. All the financial statements generated from the ERP system should be quite credible. In other words, there is no possibility of cooking the books or manipulating numbers under the ERP environment. Nowadays, this managerial transparency is especially important to the reputation of a company. The importance of process innovation, the importance of data quality, and the importance of following the established rules are now accommodated much, much more than before.
