This research is intended to study literatures relating to rocking chairs in a systematic manner and analyze real-life references by different style in order to investigate characteristics of rocking chair from academic, ae -sthetic and pragmatic perspectives. The origin of rocking chair dates back beyond 1660s and the oak rocking chair built in South Lancashire and South West Yorkshire, the U.K. is the earliest dated one. Rocking chair helps adults take a rest and work more efficiently. For children, rocking chair is fun to play with and good at putting them to sleep thanks to its rocking motion. Rocking motion is effective in improving the conditions of the old and the invalid, supportive of therapies for Alzheimer Disease therapy, efficient in stimulating blood circulation and calming down nerve system and, most of all, good for people who have back problems. Rocking chair styles include the U.K. style from the 17th to 19th century, the European style from the 19th to the early 20th century. In the U.S., rocking chair evolved to Windsor rocker, Shaker rocker in the 18th to 19th century, Boston rocker, Wicker rocker in the early 19th to the 20th century, and Platform rocker, Adirondack rocker, Mission style rocker in the mid 19th to the early 20th century. In addition, modern variations of rocking chairs include the early and mid modernism style in the 20th century and the late 20th century style which also encompasses the Korean style from the late 20th century to today. References dating back from 1660 to 1914 shows that rocking chairs were manufactured en masse and in regional-specific styles in the U.K. Rocking chairs produced then included adult's rocking chair, child's rocking chair and other types for special purpose or in special style such as rocking chair with wings or platform rocker. In 1850, an innovative curvy rocking chairs made of copper tube was developed. Notably, the rocking chair from Lancashire gave influence to the Shaker chair style and the rocking chair from Linconshire and Yorkshire provided inspiration of the Windsor style in the U.S. Judging from the cases from 1840 to 1922, the most representative European rocking chair was the bentwood rocking chair made by Michael Thonet of wood bent by steam. Thonet's rocking chair gained extensive popularity among the public thanks to its utility, cost-effectiveness, endurance and lightweightness. European rocking chairs were mass-produced and mostly designed around functional style with curves. Windsor rocker(1740s~late 19th century) of the 18th century which is the earliest rocking chair in the U.S. is an adaptation of Windsor chair which originated in the U.K. Depending on the shape of the back, it breaks down to traditional bow-back, bird cage-back, comb-back, and arrow-back styles. Shaker rocker(1790~1935) pursued austere and simple look with functional style due to religious faith and community philosophy of its makers. Notably, back post finial incorporating the local preference of the community dwellers, 3 different armrest styles and a variety of skate configurations are the key elements in defining the unique Shaker rocker style. Boston rocker(1820s~late 19th century) of the early 19th century was the first rocking chair mass produced in the 1840s. Its most noteworthy features include S-curve seat consisting of 3 plates and crest with stencil decorations. Wicker rocker(1840s~1930s) divides into the early Victorian style and the late Art Nouveau fancy style. It was handcrafted to retain human touches and classified into child's type, female type and male type, depending on targeted users. Platform rocker(1850~1899) adopted stationary base, spring and hinge and iron supports for platform. In addition, Platform rocker breaks down to Renaissance-revival style, Hunzinger style, Victorian style, Shaker copy style. Adirondack rocker(1850s~1940s) has 4 different sub-styles which are Old Hickory Chair Co. style, Bentwood rocker style, Westport rocker style, and Mottville rocker style. Mission style rocker(1880~1920) adopted straight line style and functional features as if to reflect the American thrift and diligence and Gustav Stickley's rocking chair was the most representative of Mission style rockers. In days of early Modernism during the 20th century, Western rocking chairs (1925~1945) embodied actively the simple functionalism concept that furniture design must follow functionality considerations. Therefore, bare wood rocking chairs were without any surface decoration and tubular steel frame rocking chairs often included black leather upholsteries in a bold attempt to express exposed structure. In the mid Modernism era of the 20th century (1945~1970), Western rocking chairs adopted a variety of non-wood materials ranging from plastics, fiberglass, moulded plywood, Aluminium, steel, bronze, leather, paint, etc. In the late 20th century (1970~2005), traditional style, innovative style and experimental style began to coexist with each other and far more drastic style of non-functional rocking chair employing several different materials showed up. Rocking chair inflowed into Korean since 1930s. It was handcrafted and mass produced at small scale workshops in mid 1970s. Since Kwak Dae Woong made the 1st rocking chair of its kind in Korea in 1978 on the academic side and Yerang became the 1st furniture manufacturer that followed his suit in the early 1980s, more rocking chairs have appeared in Korea. Rocking chairs that the academic community produced in the late 20th century used a variety of material combinations including bare wood, plywood, M. D. F., veneering, steel tube and leather, etc. Except for zelkova, such rocking chairs depended significantly on import wood. After 2000, rocking chairs began to feature single material (usually import wood) configuration with minimum decoration. The shape became simpler and more structural and adopted a variety of expressions. However, experimental attempts were not sufficient. Rocking chair which has long years of tradition as shown above has evolved in different shapes and styles to date in reflection of locale-specific preference, culture, social conditions, religious faith and lifestyle changes. This paper attempts not only to study the evolution of modern and latest rocking chair styles but also to provide key reference to help understand the overall configuration of rocking chair. In other words, this paper is intended to build a practical platform for understanding rocking chair by consolidating sporadic research conclusions and biblical references relating to each style of rocking chair and it is hoped that it will provide substantial reference for future studies on the same subject.
