As a fundamental work to improve tea cultivars for good quality and high yielding, Korean wild tea (Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze), were collected from 122 locations including Jaweon Temple in Boseong County, and physical and chemical properties of the soils and vegetation at each natural habitat were investigated. The wild tea collection were classified into groups based on morphological, chemical and molecular biological characteristics, and the relationships among each characters were investigated. The soil pH of the natural habitats ranged from 4.2~6.6 and 96% habitats fell within the range of 4.0~5.5 which is desirable for tea cultivation. The soils contained organic matters at the range of 10.2~112.6g/Kg, total nitrogen at 0.11~0.49%, available P₂O^(5) at 9~290㎎/㎏, the exchangeable cations of K+, Ca++ and Mg++ at 0.14~0.93, 0.46~33.7 and 0.23~6.05c㏖+/㎏, respectively, varying by sites but were similar, on the average, to 0.32, 4.2 and 1.2c㏖+/㎏ of upland soil. The C.E.C and E.C of the soils varied by sites ranging 2.2~35.6c㏖+/㎏ and 0.11~0.58dS/m. It was found that the wild tea in Korea distributed southward from Byeonsan Peninsula in the west coast and from Woolsan County in the east coast, corresponding to 34~35°N in latitude and 126~128°E in longitude. The wild tea were generally found bellow the elevation of 300m above tea level. Surrounding vegetation of the wild tea were scrubs at 62 sites(50%) and bamboo forests at 32 sites, and 20 sites were ridgeway, indicating that wild tea grow mostly in the groves. The wild tea characteristically have small leaves of 5.88㎝ long, 2.31㎝ wide and 0.21㎝ thick on the average and the leaf shape was small lanceolate. The internodes were 11.7㎝ long and 100 buds weighted 53.2g Morphological characters at the natural habitats mostly consisted in the germplasm plots where the collected clones are grown. The important chemical composition of the wild tea collections was total nitrogen at 4.49%, total amino acids at 1,880㎎/100g, tannins at 9.00%, caffeines at 1.84% From this study we have identified 3 genotypes for low caffeine content at around 1.20%, 12 genotypes for high catechin content and high proportion of (-)EGCg, at the same time other 9 genotypes were selected for good quality. These lines showed hue(a/b) values smaller than -0.350, resulting in dark green tea devoid of yellowish color. The 30 genotypes selected based on morphological and chemical properties were classified into groups by RAPD analysis. There times showed hue values (a/b) smaller than 0.350, resulting in clark green teas devoid of yellowish color. The PCR resulted in 120 polymorphic bands by 20 primers, of which 101 bands (84.7%) showed polymorphism. Genetic distance ranged from 0.52 (between No. 7 and No. 14) to 0.96 (between No. 17 and No. 20) but mostly between 0.70 and 0.90, indicating narrow genetic variability. The wild tea grow in the scrubs or bamboo forests were generally superior in morphological traits and those grow on the ridgeway lower than 100m above sea level tended to contain desired ingredients at higher amount. This tendency would help locate breeding materials for the specific objectives. The wild tea belonging to different molecular biological groups differed in morphological traits such as leaf width, leaf area, number of leaf veins, leaf angle, and shoot thickness as well as in chemical composition such as contents of total nitrogen and total amino acids. In conclusion, the present study indicated the possibility of selecting promising tea genotypes from wild germplasms, in terms of morphological traits as well as chemical composition. The molecular biological relations could help locate the variability for effect recombinations to improve tea cultivars.
