This study investigated the characteristics of adsorption and separation of chlorinated organic compounds, 2,4-D and TCA, from the aqueous solution onto the granular activated carbon (GAC). Equilibrium adsorption capacities of the chlorinated organic compounds increased as the solution pH decreased. The adsorption equilibrium isotherm of 2,4-D and TCA was well represented by Sips equation. Kinetic parameters for a batch adsorber were measured in to observe the adsorption rates of the chlorinated organic compounds. The internal diffusion coefficient of the chlorinated organic compounds was determined by means of comparison between the experimental concentration curves and those predicted from a surface diffusion model (SDM) and a pore diffusion model (PDM). The intra-particle diffusion of the chlorinated organic compounds was well explained by PDM. The linear driving force approximation (LDFA) model was used to simulate the isothermal adsorption behavior of the chlorinated organic compounds in a fixed bed adsorber and successfully predicted it under various operating conditions. Over 95 percent of the adsorbed chlorinated organic compounds was desorbed using distilled water. The adsorption behaviors of semi-fluidized and fluidized beds were also studied. The breakthrough curve obtained from semi-fluidized bed lies between those obtained from the fixed and fluidized beds, since a semi-fluidized bed possesses the features of both the fixed and fluidized beds. This study demonstrates that the GAC can be used to effectively separate the chlorinated organic compounds, 2,4-D and TCA, via adsorption and desorption process.
