A Study on the Performance of the Piano Based on Mussorgsky’s Work, “Pictures at an Exhibition” This dissertation, focusing on M. P. Mussorgsky’s work, “Pictures at an Exhibition”, mainly discusses about various techniques of piano performance, and which techniques are the most appropriate for each of the 10 pieces. Before examining these, it is necessary to first understand Mussorgsky’s music and its characteristics, his life, the background in composing the masterpiece, and the piece itself. And in doing so, the purpose here would be to perform well by applying the relevant, harmonious techniques to each different tune. However, in playing “Pictures at an Exhibition” on the piano, a few problems were observed. The musical range was too broad for most hands to cover, and unexpected appearances of accents made it difficult for the performer. Although the piano is often referred to as a small orchestra, much contemplation was required in implementing several different colors of tune due to the piano’s unique peculiarity of continuous sounding. In the symphony arranged by Labelle of the piece, one can see that these problems are compensated by introducing many different instruments. In my opinion, the reasons why even the great maestros hesitate to perform “Pictures at an Exhibition” are its length, the difficulty in memorizing the notes, and above all the burden of effectively using numerous techniques. Nevertheless, through this difficult process, I sure have been able to deeply comprehend various performing techniques and much time and effort invested in doing so was very rewarding and memorable.
