(Abstract) This study aims to provide suggestions for educational settings regarding juveniles' friendship quality through understanding the influence of variables- self-esteem, social capital within families, family backgrounds, and schools on juveniles' friendship quality, and analyze the organic relational structure among the variables. In order to attain this goal, this study dealt with research questions as below in detail. First, to what degrees do potential variables- self-esteem, social capital within families, family backgrounds and schools affect friendship quality? Second, what could be a relational structure model where variables- self-esteem, social capital within families, family backgrounds and schools affect friendship quality? In order to solve the above questions, the researcher analyzed the result of the 4th year version of the Korea Youth Panel Survey which was conducted for 2nd graders in middle schools through the nation and their families. In order to analyze the relational structure among variables affecting friendship quality, the SPSS 12.0 and AMOS 5.0 were employed. The results of the study are as below. First, it was revealed that individuals' sense of self-esteem has a positive effect on friendship quality. In addition, of variables directly affecting friendship quality, a sense of self-esteem has the biggest effect. Second, it was revealed that social capital within families has a positive effect on friendship quality. It can be said that the more parents try to spend more time with and feel love and affection to their children, the more friendship quality the children show. Third, while family backgrounds have a direct effect on friendship quality, those affect the quality indirectly with the mediation of social capital. It could be understood that in the end a variable with the biggest effect on friendship quality is social capital. Fourth, it was revealed that the school variable has an indirectly positive effect on friendship quality by affecting a sense of self-esteem. Fifth, when looking at the relational structure among variables influencing friendship quality, social capital would improve friendship quality directly, and otherwise it would affect the quality indirectly through parameters, school and self-esteem variables. In addition, the positive relationship between teachers and students influences friendship quality by enhancing a sense of self-esteem among students.
