Despite the needs of English reading skills that require learners' active involvement in reading, it is difficult to teach English reading with such techniques due to the restrictions of time, space and money allotted for a class. The Purpose of this study is to develop effective teaching techniques which can encourage students' participation and improve reading skills through active reading approaches. What this study suggests is the techniques using Graphic Organizers when reading English short stories as a text. For teenagers , English short stories are effective texts that help readers immerge into the text relatively easily. It is true especially in that English short stories offer the sense of confidence and achievement to readers since they are short. However, having a good text is not enough to lead students to active participation in reading. This study introduces using Graphic Organizers when reading English short stories as an effective reading technique. Graphic Organizers are the supplementary markers that organizes certain information with good layouts. Reading used to be thought as a passive act of comprehending every word just by looking through a text. Graphic Organizers require readers to continuously go back and forth of the text, which will bring students to contemplate the content with deep participation in reading . There had been studies that experimented to see the effectiveness of using Graphic Organizers comparing to traditional reading teaching. Through checking with the studies, it was possible to prove that using Graphic Organizers is an effective way not only in the congnitive but inthe Affective area. Based on these studies, the techniques this study suggests are as follow. First, it is to guess before reading. Through Graphic Organizers such as semantic webs or anticipation guides, students can guess the content of the text just by looking at the title or the cover page. Second, it is to analyze while reading. Unlike silent reading, this requires students to single out various aspects of the content such as characters, structures, or the real intention of the author. There are Graphic Organizers like character webs or character grids that can be utilized in this phase. Third, it is to discuss after reading. Students can compare and contrast the facts or feelings of their own with the response of other students. Graphic Organizers like comparison grid can be used in this phase.
