Alcoholism is a problem not only of an alcoholic but also of family members of the alcoholic. It is a family disease which affects the family members, let alone the alcoholics themselves. Efforts and cooperation by government bodies and civil organizations are desperately required since the alcoholics and their family members require treatment together. Especially, this study investigated the association between the faith and recovery of the alcoholic's families, with the subjects of both Al-Anon, a self-help group consisted of the alcoholics' family members, and Al-Anon adult children Group meetings. The survey was conducted of Al-Anon and adult children's meetings of the alcoholics from October 22, 2007 to December 6, 2007. It finally analyzed 105 copies out of the 240 distributed questionnaires after collecting 115 copies, with the exception of 10 unavailable copies. This present study used self-filling method with a cross-sectional study. Concerning the method of distribution and collection of the questionnaires, I visited some of the self-help groups in Seoul myself, took part in the meetings, and asked their helps after explaining the purposes of this research. Then I revisited and collected the questionnaires. As for the local regions and some districts of Seoul, I got information including the addresses and telephone numbers of the self-help groups across the nation. I asked directors in charge of their regions to send the questionnaires back to me under their consents after explaining the purport of the research. In other words, I mailed them self-addressed envelopes enclosed with stamps when sending the questionnaires to them. The questionnaires used in this research had a total of 49 items, with 13 items on the 12-steps spiritual recovery program: 11 items on self-help groups(Al-Anon, adult children's meetings), 10 items on faith and religions questions, 5 items on conflict tactics scale, and 10 items on demographic and sociological matters. SPSS Window 13.0 was used in analyzing the data, Frequency Analysis was used in measuring the demographic and sociological characteristics of the subjects, and Chi-square test, t-test, and ANOVA were used in analyzing the actual conditions of the subjects and the results of hypothesis testing. The present study has analyzed 1) the effects of self-help groups for the recovery of the alcoholic's families, 2) the effects of the 12-step recovery program, and proved 3) the relations between faith and recovery. First, the self-help group includes those who need recovery(healing) from the alcoholism-induced problems as a closed meeting of cooperators. Through 12-steps spiritual programs and peace-requesting prayers used by A.A.(Alcoholics Anonymous), Al-Anon, Alateen, and their adult children's meetings, they will certainly benefit from attending those meetings faithfully because faith and recovery are closely related each other. The following results showed that the participants in the self-help group meetings had significantly high scores in the faith item.(p=.013) The hypothesis that the participants would have high self-esteem was not significant, but the item was significant that the meeting would help the alcoholic's families.(p=.001) Second, the hypothesis has been verified that the participation rate of the 12-steps recovery program used in the self-help meetings would influence on the extent of recovery. Specifically, 94.1% of the male and female respondents of the questionnaires gave positive answers, which was very significant.(p=.000) 90% of the respondents answered that the existence of God helped the recovery and gave positive answers, which was very significant.(p=.000) Third, in the relation between faith and recovery, the hypothesis that as the participants' faith became deeper and deeper, the greater the extent of recovery from damages would be was proved. In this study, 83.4% of the male and female respondents gave positive answers on the question whether the existence of God would help the alcoholics and their family members suffering from the alcoholism-induced problems, which was very significant.(p=.012) The group members who thought that the self-help meetings would be helpful to the alcoholics's families were 80%, which was very significant.(p=.000) In the analysis of the question whether the existence of God could solve the alcoholism problem, those who believed so and gave positive answers were 85%, which was very significant.(p=.000) The assumption that the more pious people would show higher extent of recovery was proved and 70.8% of the respondents who took part in the self-help group meetings answered that they were church-goers, which was very significant.(p=.000) Thus, the problem of recovery(healing) of the alcoholic's families is desperately required to be solved. Further, the families' religious efforts, supports of the religious organizations, and the governmental supports should be given since the necessity of self-help meetings as its means, effects of the 12-steps spiritual program for recovery, and the relation between faith and recovery were proven.
