Devices fabricated with one-dimensional nanostructures such as carbon nanotubes and semiconductor nanowires have shown to be a promising material for highly sensitive sensors. They offer the excellent sensitivity, rapid response time, and do not require labeling. Carbon nanotube and nanowires, with a large surface-to-volume ratio, as well as remarkable electrical properties and the interesting relationship between their geometric structure and electronic properties, is a strong candidate for sensor application. In this study, we have fabricated devices using carbon nanotubes and nanowires, and investigated the possibility of using them chemical/biosensor materials. Chapter 1 is a brief introduction to carbon nanotubes and nanowires, and advantages of nanostructured materials in sensing. In Chapter 2, we fabricated single-walled carbon nanotube field effect transistors, and investigated the effect of metal nanoparticles decoration on their gas sensing capabilities. By coating the carbon nanotube with Pd nanoparticles, we could develop sensors that exhibited a reasonable sensitivity toward H2 gas. The transfer characteristics of the device showed Schottky behavior with the Al-coated SWNT-FETs, and the current passing through the nanotube was found to decrease. However, the sensitivity toward both NO2 and NH3 is greatly enhanced by the Al nanoparticles decoration. We suggest that the metal-particle decoration could be exploited to tailor either the transfer characteristics of nanoscale devices, or to tune the sensitivity of nanotube-based chemical and biological nanosensors. And we present an approach to use individual GaP, ZnO nanowire and PANI (Polyanilin) nanofibre as chemical sensors working at room temperature. These devices exhibited significantly improved chemical sensing performance compared to existing solid-sate sensors in many aspects such as the sensitivity, response time, and working temperature. Among them, PAIN nanofibres synthesized with biocatalyst show highly sensitive NH3 gas response. While we could achieve GaP nanowire sensors that are sensitive toward NH3, NO2 and H2 by Pd nanoparticles decorations. Also, bare ZnO nanowire devices show delicate changes of conductance with vacuum condition. Then, humidity can be sensed using this mechanism by observing the changes of conductance. In Chapter 3, we demonstrate the Au-cluster decorated single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT) as effective biosensor platforms. Nanoscale Au clusters was formed on the side walls of carbon nanotubes in transistor geometry by using electroless deposition, electrochemical deposition and simple physical evaporation techniques. The effect of Au cluster decoration appears as a hole dopant in electrical transport characteristics regardless of the decoration method. Thiolated single stranded probe DNAs were successfully immobilized on Au clusters decorated single-walled carbon nanotube field effect transistors (SWNT-FET), and this appeared as a decrease in conductance that could be explained by the decrease of Au work function upon adsorption of thiolated DNA oligomers. While a target ssDNA with a single mismatch does not give any change in electrical conductance, clear increase of conductance observed with matching ssDNA, thereby showing the possibility of SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) detection using Au-cluster decorated SWNT-FETs. Finally, in Chapter 4 we discuss the present and the future of electrical nanosensors fabricated with one-dimensional nanostructures.
