It takes very long time to fabricate the large optics mirror because of the amount and quality of material required in fabrication. Until today, most of fabrication processes have been heavily relied on the engineer's experience. In this manner, it was quite difficult to fabricate many large mirror blanks in a limited time, which as the major obstacle for very large telescope projects worldwide. The precise grinding process is very important to reduce the fabrication time because it can significantly reduce the polishing time which takes the longest time during the whole course of the fabrication process. In this study, I analyzed the characteristics of grinding process using a CNC machine by monitoring the variation of the surface roughness. The fabrication parameters considered in this experiment were; linear velocity of the wheel, wheel rotation speed, rake angle of the wheel, grit size of the wheel, and the density of slurry. As a result, linear velocity of the wheel and wheel rotation speed did not affect the surface roughness which means we can grind the optics up to 1 m in diameter with the similar surface roughness. Also, surface roughness was larger as the wheel grit increased. Furthermore, the density of slurry was critical in surface roughness; as the density of slurry was thick, the surface roughness was higher. Based on above preliminary experiments, a 200 mm diameter concave parabolic surface with a radius of curvature of 1300 mm was fabricated. As a result, there was an approximately 1 % radius of curvature error which was caused by inaccurate zero settings of the fabrication wheel. Also, the roughness average increased in relation to the angle foo the fabrication surface from a plane level due to the variation of the rakee angle of the wheel. To apply CNC machine to the real process of glass fabrication, it is necessary to investigate further characteristics of the CNC machine, including the accurate zero setting method.
