The nutrition of infant period has effects on not only the physical and mental development but also the health status of adult period. After 4-6months from the birth, it's hard for infants to take all the nutrients needed to their growth and development from only breast milk and they should adopt to adult dietary intake gradually, so the proper selection of baby food is essential for enough nutrition supply and right formation of dietary habit. There's need to investigate the nutrient composition of baby food on market as the use of baby food on market became common and it is needed to review whether the baby food on market encourages the status of nutrition intake with good quality for consumers evaluate the nutrition status through only the nutrition indication. Also, nutrition evaluation on whether the food companies produce baby food which meet the revised standard of nutrition as the Dietary Reference Intakes for Koreans (KDRIs) was established newly in 2005. At such current situation, we selected 55 kinds of infant/baby food of 5 companies sold in large-sized discount stores and carried out the investigation on nutrient composition, raw material composition, instruction and amount of intake, and avail of nutrition and other ingredients expressed on the containers for a month from Oct. 1, to Nov. 1 ,2006. We conducted technology statistic analysis to review the nutrition composition included in the baby food on market, One way ANOVA to check out the difference by manufacturers and cross analysis to get the characteristics of each baby food manufacturers on market at present. The results are as follows. 1. There was a considerable difference of nutrient content provided by baby food on market among the products. It showed that the content of protein, fat, carbohydrate and calcium of baby food on market didn't come up to the standard of nutrition intake amount for Korean when comparing the intake of at one time with one of the standard of nutrition intake amount for Korean. Furthermore, the content of sodium, vitamin-C and iron is too high and it indicated the baby food on market is not suitable in the aspect of nutrition. 2. It showed that it's difficult for the infants at the preparatory stage of baby food to experience new elements of food, new taste and flavor to be offered various foods trough the baby food on market since all the baby food on market are made of ingredients of mixed raw materials and there was no product made from one element of raw materials. 3. There were only two types of baby food on market and the most were 'baby food in gruel type'. The food on market for infants were not as various as other kinds of food. 4. In the aspect of packing of baby food sold on large-sized discount store, 'retort' was its mainstream and the baby food in retort on market showed high ratio of sodium content. 5. Those were sold without clear scientific basis on how much nutrient components and other elements the baby food on market included and why such elements should be included on the products, and it said the products were advertised exaggeratively by expressing the avail of elements. 6. Most of baby food on market proposed the instruction on the packing of products and indicated the month of infants applicable to the products. There were, however, many products without indication by month according to digestion ability and even products with the indication of month of baby included high ratio of sodium. The result of this study presents that there is need to understand the problems of baby food on market and develop various baby food proper to infants.
