Abstract The Life and Transcendentalism of Lee Gap-cheol's Photography Name: Song Sujong Department: Visual Culture Studies Advisor: Kim Sung-Do The thesis aims to understand Lee Gap-cheol's photography. Lee is often evaluated as a photographer who incorporates the common Korean sentiment into his work with feeling of han恨 and shamanism as its basis. Through photography, a mechanic realization of the western views, he destructed the existing frame of photographic language and succeeded in attaining the oriental sentiment and philosophy. He began his career as a documentary photographer, yet in the process of capturing the abstract sphere of sentiment and soul in the form of visual images, he expanded the domain of documentary photography which is one of his great achievements. This research starts with such estimations on Lee but attempts to go over the boundary of simple Korean sentiment and view his work with a broader aspect. Lee Gap-cheol's main subject is rural agricultural villages as a space to confirm the limitedness of human beings and power of life in nature. In this space, Lee realizes the fate of humans who all die someday, and looks at the presence of a surreal world beyond death. Therefore rural areas are a space of silence and symbol of primitive power of life where Lee looks into an inner world beyond one dimensional world which he confirms with his physical eyes. As such primitive power of life, nature acts as a medium of real and surrealistic world to Lee. In his work, even clouds, water, fire are not portrayed as simple objects but appear as symbol of pratityasamutpada, the Buddhist thought that the world is an interconnection of cause and effect, while animals and insects like butterflies, chickens and cows are seen as symbols of reincarnation or subject of pantheism. While finding awe of life and realization of the surreal world through nature, Lee focuses on rituals as a passage of reaching this surreal world beyond reality. From gut(exorcism) soothing the soul of the living and the dead, to the Fishery Festival paying respect to the sublime ocean, all rituals heal the wounds of reality and express the emotional energy aiming to reach the surreal world. However, ritual is only a rite of passage to cure the wound, and can not overcome the wound itself, thus failing to provide the final clue to solve the problem. Healing is only possible through inner reflection of oneself and not by spiritual subjects. In the end, Lee seeks to reach the world of surrealism and escape the reality by moving onto the world of deliverance and nothingness through reflection.
