Culture is the essence of the lifestyle of one people, so we cannot generally compare one culture of one people with another culture of another people. Nonetheless, we have had the complex on our own Korean traditional culture for a few decades. We have experienced 'Globalization' in various parts since the industrialized era. We have changed our own traditional culture with the 'global' standard as well as our own politic, economic, and society. However, this kind of progress has led to lose our cultural identity and even apart from the succession and development of our traditional culture. The traditional culture should be not the remains of the past but the dynamic and vivid culture in our current life. Therefore, it should have the strong vitality to connect the past, the present and the future in the cultural pluralism with coexisting the various races, various cultures, and various features of lifestyles. The 'Art' is the very one which presents the cultural standard of one country. The art has the university to bind the various world into one nation beyond races, nationalities and lifestyles. Having the global university means that the 'art' is the closest with the 'globalization'. Therefore, the establishment of the tradition through the art can provide the way for the Korean traditional culture to proceed in the aspect of the cultural pluralism. This study is focused on the Korean traditional buildings in this view. The 'building' is the integral form of the formative art. So, this study is focused on the features of Korean traditional buildings and tried to show that Korean traditional buildings are not the remains of the past but the living art in modern society. Above all, I try to expand the interpretations on the Korean traditional buildings by the artistic cultural approach as well as the architectural approach for studying the traditional buildings. For this, I surveyed Yangdong Town in Kyungju among many Korean traditional towns and studied the establishment and the development of this town, because it was useful to find the buildings of Yangdong Town, which were remained in the 'traditional' form perfectly, as the target. Especially, I compared and analyzed the features of 'Gwangajeong' and 'Hyangdan' and studied the formative features of these two buildings. 'Gwangajeong' is externally closed, but internally open. On the other hand, 'Hyangdan' is externally open but internally closed. As the result of analyzing the formative elements and formative principles in the base of the architectural features, 'Gwangajeong' has the beauty of moderation with the stable, acceptable and introvert feeling, but 'Hyangdan' has the beauty of creation with the dynamic, expressive and extrovert feeling. Also, as the result of studying the features of these two buildings, they have opposite features in the architectural aspects, but we can conclude that they commonly show the natural beauty in every corner of the buildings, which is the ideas of harmonizing with the nature and looking similar with the nature. The artistic cultural approach of 'Gwangajeong' and 'Hyangdan' has the meaning to expand the understanding and appreciation on the Korean traditional buildings as well as the results of the previous studies.
