The purpose of this study was to analyze scientifically gifted students' hypothesizing and designing process and their behavioral characteristics during conducting open inquiry task. Participants for this study were ten scientifically gifted students who were in science high school in D city, Korea. To collect data for analyzing science high school students' inquiry process and their behavioral characteristics, the researcher observed and recorded science high school students' inquiry situation, and interviewed with students to collect additional data. The protocol to analyze the result was established from recorded data and from the students' inquiry note. The findings of this study were as follows; science high school students' hypothesizing and designing processes didn't follow fixed sequence, but the inquiry process depended upon students' selection by the existing state of things. Science high school students recognized the steps of inquiry process adequately, but they didn't have appropriate understanding about logical relationship between the inquiry steps. Science high school students reflected upon their practical environment, ability of inquiry, and preference when they searched the theme, selected the theme, searched the information, used the information, selected the materials for experiment, selected the method, and modified the method. Because they conducted open inquiry without generating questions, therefore they had some difficulty when they selected the theme and generated hypothesis. Science high school students designed the experiment without detailed descriptions because they selected inquiry theme from the completed research. They conducted the pre-test without consideration of quantitative aspect and modified the experiment procedure according to the existing state of things. The results implied that it is necessary to develop the adequate programs for scientifically gifted student, which make students experience the objectivity and logicality, and understand importance of curiosity and of generating questions to develop their scientific inquiry ability.
